TRANSLATION

Alif, Lam, Meem

|||
1

ذَٰلِكَ ٱلۡكِتَٰبُ لَا رَيۡبَۛ فِيهِۛ هُدٗى لِّلۡمُتَّقِينَ

Thalika alkitabu la rayba feehi hudan lilmuttaqeena

WORD BY WORD
ذَٰلِكَdhālikaThat
ٱلۡكِتَٰبُl-kitābu(is) the book
لَاno
رَيۡبَۛraybadoubt
فِيهِۛfīhiin it
هُدٗىhudana Guidance
لِّلۡمُتَّقِينَlil'muttaqīnafor the God-conscious
TRANSLATION

This is the Book about which there is no doubt, a guidance for those conscious of Allah

|||
2

ٱلَّذِينَ يُؤۡمِنُونَ بِٱلۡغَيۡبِ وَيُقِيمُونَ ٱلصَّلَوٰةَ وَمِمَّا رَزَقۡنَٰهُمۡ يُنفِقُونَ

Allatheena yuminoona bialghaybi wayuqeemoona alssalata wamimma razaqnahum yunfiqoona

WORD BY WORD
ٱلَّذِينَalladhīnaThose who
يُؤۡمِنُونَyu'minūnabelieve
بِٱلۡغَيۡبِbil-ghaybiin the unseen
وَيُقِيمُونَwayuqīmūnaand establish
ٱلصَّلَوٰةَl-ṣalatathe prayer
وَمِمَّاwamimmāand out of what
رَزَقۡنَٰهُمۡrazaqnāhumWe have provided them
يُنفِقُونَyunfiqūnathey spend
TRANSLATION

Who believe in the unseen, establish prayer, and spend out of what We have provided for them

|||
3

وَٱلَّذِينَ يُؤۡمِنُونَ بِمَآ أُنزِلَ إِلَيۡكَ وَمَآ أُنزِلَ مِن قَبۡلِكَ وَبِٱلۡأٓخِرَةِ هُمۡ يُوقِنُونَ

Waallatheena yuminoona bima onzila ilayka wama onzila min qablika wabialakhirati hum yooqinoona

WORD BY WORD
وَٱلَّذِينَwa-alladhīnaAnd those who
يُؤۡمِنُونَyu'minūnabelieve
بِمَآbimāin what
أُنزِلَunzila(is) sent down
إِلَيۡكَilaykato you
وَمَآwamāand what
أُنزِلَunzilawas sent down
مِنminfrom
قَبۡلِكَqablikabefore you
وَبِٱلۡأٓخِرَةِwabil-ākhiratiand in the Hereafter
هُمۡhumthey
يُوقِنُونَyūqinūnafirmly believe
TRANSLATION

And who believe in what has been revealed to you, [O Muhammad], and what was revealed before you, and of the Hereafter they are certain [in faith]

|||
4

أُوْلَـٰٓئِكَ عَلَىٰ هُدٗى مِّن رَّبِّهِمۡۖ وَأُوْلَـٰٓئِكَ هُمُ ٱلۡمُفۡلِحُونَ

Olaika AAala hudan min rabbihim waolaika humu almuflihoona

WORD BY WORD
أُوْلَـٰٓئِكَulāikaThose
عَلَىٰʿalā(are) on
هُدٗىhudanGuidance
مِّنminfrom
رَّبِّهِمۡۖrabbihimtheir Lord
وَأُوْلَـٰٓئِكَwa-ulāikaand those
هُمُhumuthey
ٱلۡمُفۡلِحُونَl-muf'liḥūna(are) the successful ones
TRANSLATION

Those are upon [right] guidance from their Lord, and it is those who are the successful

|||
5

إِنَّ ٱلَّذِينَ كَفَرُواْ سَوَآءٌ عَلَيۡهِمۡ ءَأَنذَرۡتَهُمۡ أَمۡ لَمۡ تُنذِرۡهُمۡ لَا يُؤۡمِنُونَ

Inna allatheena kafaroo sawaon AAalayhim aanthartahum am lam tunthirhum la yuminoona

WORD BY WORD
إِنَّinnaIndeed
ٱلَّذِينَalladhīnathose who
كَفَرُواْkafarūdisbelieve[d]
سَوَآءٌsawāon(it) is same
عَلَيۡهِمۡʿalayhimto them
ءَأَنذَرۡتَهُمۡa-andhartahumwhether you warn them
أَمۡamor
لَمۡlamnot
تُنذِرۡهُمۡtundhir'humyou warn them
لَاnot
يُؤۡمِنُونَyu'minūnathey believe
TRANSLATION

Indeed, those who disbelieve - it is all the same for them whether you warn them or do not warn them - they will not believe

|||
6

خَتَمَ ٱللَّهُ عَلَىٰ قُلُوبِهِمۡ وَعَلَىٰ سَمۡعِهِمۡۖ وَعَلَىٰٓ أَبۡصَٰرِهِمۡ غِشَٰوَةٞۖ وَلَهُمۡ عَذَابٌ عَظِيمٞ

Khatama Allahu AAala quloobihim waAAala samAAihim waAAala absarihim ghishawatun walahum AAathabun AAatheemun

خَتَمَkhatamaHas set a seal
ٱللَّهُl-lahuAllah
عَلَىٰʿalāon
قُلُوبِهِمۡqulūbihimtheir hearts
وَعَلَىٰwaʿalāand on
سَمۡعِهِمۡۖsamʿihimtheir hearing
وَعَلَىٰٓwaʿalāand on
أَبۡصَٰرِهِمۡabṣārihimtheir vision
غِشَٰوَةٞۖghishāwatun(is) a veil
وَلَهُمۡwalahumAnd for them
عَذَابٌʿadhābun(is) a punishment
عَظِيمٞʿaẓīmungreat
TRANSLATION

Allah has set a seal upon their hearts and upon their hearing, and over their vision is a veil. And for them is a great punishment

|||
7

وَمِنَ ٱلنَّاسِ مَن يَقُولُ ءَامَنَّا بِٱللَّهِ وَبِٱلۡيَوۡمِ ٱلۡأٓخِرِ وَمَا هُم بِمُؤۡمِنِينَ

Wamina alnnasi man yaqoolu amanna biAllahi wabialyawmi alakhiri wama hum bimumineena

WORD BY WORD
وَمِنَwaminaAnd of
ٱلنَّاسِl-nāsithe people
مَنman(are some) who
يَقُولُyaqūlusay
ءَامَنَّاāmannāWe believed
بِٱللَّهِbil-lahiin Allah
وَبِٱلۡيَوۡمِwabil-yawmiand in the Day
ٱلۡأٓخِرِl-ākhiri[the] Last
وَمَاwamābut not
هُمhumthey
بِمُؤۡمِنِينَbimu'minīna(are) believers (at all)
TRANSLATION

And of the people are some who say, "We believe in Allah and the Last Day," but they are not believers

|||
8

يُخَٰدِعُونَ ٱللَّهَ وَٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُواْ وَمَا يَخۡدَعُونَ إِلَّآ أَنفُسَهُمۡ وَمَا يَشۡعُرُونَ

YukhadiAAoona Allaha waallatheena amanoo wama yakhdaAAoona illa anfusahum wama yashAAuroona

WORD BY WORD
يُخَٰدِعُونَyukhādiʿūnaThey seek to deceive
ٱللَّهَl-lahaAllah
وَٱلَّذِينَwa-alladhīnaand those who
ءَامَنُواْāmanūbelieve[d]
وَمَاwamāand not
يَخۡدَعُونَyakhdaʿūnathey deceive
إِلَّآillāexcept
أَنفُسَهُمۡanfusahumthemselves
وَمَاwamāand not
يَشۡعُرُونَyashʿurūnathey realize (it)
TRANSLATION

They [think to] deceive Allah and those who believe, but they deceive not except themselves and perceive [it] not

|||
9

فِي قُلُوبِهِم مَّرَضٞ فَزَادَهُمُ ٱللَّهُ مَرَضٗاۖ وَلَهُمۡ عَذَابٌ أَلِيمُۢ بِمَا كَانُواْ يَكۡذِبُونَ

Fee quloobihim maradun fazadahumu Allahu maradan walahum AAathabun aleemun bima kanoo yakthiboona

WORD BY WORD
فِيIn
قُلُوبِهِمqulūbihimtheir hearts
مَّرَضٞmaraḍun(is) a disease
فَزَادَهُمُfazādahumuso has increased them
ٱللَّهُl-lahuAllah
مَرَضٗاۖmaraḍan(in) disease
وَلَهُمۡwalahumand for them
عَذَابٌʿadhābun(is) a punishment
أَلِيمُۢalīmunpainful
بِمَاbimābecause
كَانُواْkānūthey used to
يَكۡذِبُونَyakdhibūna[they] lie
TRANSLATION

In their hearts is disease, so Allah has increased their disease; and for them is a painful punishment because they [habitually] used to lie

|||
10

وَإِذَا قِيلَ لَهُمۡ لَا تُفۡسِدُواْ فِي ٱلۡأَرۡضِ قَالُوٓاْ إِنَّمَا نَحۡنُ مُصۡلِحُونَ

Waitha qeela lahum la tufsidoo fee alardi qaloo innama nahnu muslihoona

WORD BY WORD
وَإِذَاwa-idhāAnd when
قِيلَqīlait is said
لَهُمۡlahumto them
لَا(Do) not
تُفۡسِدُواْtuf'sidūspread corruption
فِيin
ٱلۡأَرۡضِl-arḍithe earth
قَالُوٓاْqālūthey say
إِنَّمَاinnamāOnly
نَحۡنُnaḥnuwe
مُصۡلِحُونَmuṣ'liḥūna(are) reformers
TRANSLATION

And when it is said to them, "Do not cause corruption on the earth," they say, "We are but reformers

|||
11

أَلَآ إِنَّهُمۡ هُمُ ٱلۡمُفۡسِدُونَ وَلَٰكِن لَّا يَشۡعُرُونَ

Ala innahum humu almufsidoona walakin la yashAAuroona

WORD BY WORD
أَلَآalāBeware
إِنَّهُمۡinnahumindeed they
هُمُhumuthemselves
ٱلۡمُفۡسِدُونَl-muf'sidūna(are) the ones who spread corruption
وَلَٰكِنwalākin[and] but
لَّاnot
يَشۡعُرُونَyashʿurūnathey realize (it)
TRANSLATION

Unquestionably, it is they who are the corrupters, but they perceive [it] not

|||
12

وَإِذَا قِيلَ لَهُمۡ ءَامِنُواْ كَمَآ ءَامَنَ ٱلنَّاسُ قَالُوٓاْ أَنُؤۡمِنُ كَمَآ ءَامَنَ ٱلسُّفَهَآءُۗ أَلَآ إِنَّهُمۡ هُمُ ٱلسُّفَهَآءُ وَلَٰكِن لَّا يَعۡلَمُونَ

Waitha qeela lahum aminoo kama amana alnnasu qaloo anuminu kama amana alssufahao ala innahum humu alssufahao walakin la yaAAlamoona

WORD BY WORD
وَإِذَاwa-idhāAnd when
قِيلَqīlait is said
لَهُمۡlahumto them
ءَامِنُواْāminūBelieve
كَمَآkamāas
ءَامَنَāmanabelieved
ٱلنَّاسُl-nāsuthe people
قَالُوٓاْqālūthey say
أَنُؤۡمِنُanu'minuShould we believe
كَمَآkamāas
ءَامَنَāmanabelieved
ٱلسُّفَهَآءُۗl-sufahāuthe fools
أَلَآalāBeware
إِنَّهُمۡinnahumcertainly they
هُمُhumuthemselves
ٱلسُّفَهَآءُl-sufahāu(are) the fools
وَلَٰكِنwalākin[and] but
لَّاnot
يَعۡلَمُونَyaʿlamūnathey know
TRANSLATION

And when it is said to them, "Believe as the people have believed," they say, "Should we believe as the foolish have believed?" Unquestionably, it is they who are the foolish, but they know [it] not

|||
13

وَإِذَا لَقُواْ ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُواْ قَالُوٓاْ ءَامَنَّا وَإِذَا خَلَوۡاْ إِلَىٰ شَيَٰطِينِهِمۡ قَالُوٓاْ إِنَّا مَعَكُمۡ إِنَّمَا نَحۡنُ مُسۡتَهۡزِءُونَ

Waitha laqoo allatheena amanoo qaloo amanna waitha khalaw ila shayateenihim qaloo inna maAAakum innama nahnu mustahzioona

وَإِذَاwa-idhāAnd when
لَقُواْlaqūthey meet
ٱلَّذِينَalladhīnathose who
ءَامَنُواْāmanūbelieve[d]
قَالُوٓاْqālūthey say
ءَامَنَّاāmannāWe believe[d]
وَإِذَاwa-idhāBut when
خَلَوۡاْkhalawthey are alone
إِلَىٰilāwith
شَيَٰطِينِهِمۡshayāṭīnihimtheir evil ones
قَالُوٓاْqālūthey say
إِنَّاinnāIndeed, we
مَعَكُمۡmaʿakum(are) with you
إِنَّمَاinnamāonly
نَحۡنُnaḥnuwe
مُسۡتَهۡزِءُونَmus'tahziūna(are) mockers
TRANSLATION

And when they meet those who believe, they say, "We believe"; but when they are alone with their evil ones, they say, "Indeed, we are with you; we were only mockers

|||
14

ٱللَّهُ يَسۡتَهۡزِئُ بِهِمۡ وَيَمُدُّهُمۡ فِي طُغۡيَٰنِهِمۡ يَعۡمَهُونَ

Allahu yastahzio bihim wayamudduhum fee tughyanihim yaAAmahoona

WORD BY WORD
ٱللَّهُal-lahuAllah
يَسۡتَهۡزِئُyastahzi-umocks
بِهِمۡbihimat them
وَيَمُدُّهُمۡwayamudduhumand prolongs them
فِيin
طُغۡيَٰنِهِمۡṭugh'yānihimtheir transgression
يَعۡمَهُونَyaʿmahūnathey wander blindly
TRANSLATION

[But] Allah mocks them and prolongs them in their transgression [while] they wander blindly

|||
15

أُوْلَـٰٓئِكَ ٱلَّذِينَ ٱشۡتَرَوُاْ ٱلضَّلَٰلَةَ بِٱلۡهُدَىٰ فَمَا رَبِحَت تِّجَٰرَتُهُمۡ وَمَا كَانُواْ مُهۡتَدِينَ

Olaika allatheena ishtarawoo alddalalata bialhuda fama rabihat tijaratuhum wama kanoo muhtadeena

أُوْلَـٰٓئِكَulāikaThose
ٱلَّذِينَalladhīna(are) the ones who
ٱشۡتَرَوُاْish'tarawūbought
ٱلضَّلَٰلَةَl-ḍalālata[the] astraying
بِٱلۡهُدَىٰbil-hudāfor [the] guidance
فَمَاfamāSo not
رَبِحَتrabiḥatprofited
تِّجَٰرَتُهُمۡtijāratuhumtheir commerce
وَمَاwamāand not
كَانُواْkānūwere they
مُهۡتَدِينَmuh'tadīnaguided-ones
TRANSLATION

Those are the ones who have purchased error [in exchange] for guidance, so their transaction has brought no profit, nor were they guided

|||
16

مَثَلُهُمۡ كَمَثَلِ ٱلَّذِي ٱسۡتَوۡقَدَ نَارٗا فَلَمَّآ أَضَآءَتۡ مَا حَوۡلَهُۥ ذَهَبَ ٱللَّهُ بِنُورِهِمۡ وَتَرَكَهُمۡ فِي ظُلُمَٰتٖ لَّا يُبۡصِرُونَ

Mathaluhum kamathali allathee istawqada naran falamma adaat ma hawlahu thahaba Allahu binoorihim watarakahum fee thulumatin la yubsiroona

مَثَلُهُمۡmathaluhumTheir example
كَمَثَلِkamathali(is) like (the) example
ٱلَّذِيalladhī(of) the one who
ٱسۡتَوۡقَدَis'tawqadakindled
نَارٗاnārana fire
فَلَمَّآfalammāthen, when
أَضَآءَتۡaḍāatit illuminated
مَاwhat
حَوۡلَهُۥḥawlahu(was) around him
ذَهَبَdhahabatook away
ٱللَّهُl-lahuAllah
بِنُورِهِمۡbinūrihimtheir light
وَتَرَكَهُمۡwatarakahumand left them
فِيin
ظُلُمَٰتٖẓulumātindarkness[es]
لَّا(so) not
يُبۡصِرُونَyub'ṣirūna(do) they see
TRANSLATION

Their example is that of one who kindled a fire, but when it illuminated what was around him, Allah took away their light and left them in darkness [so] they could not see

|||
17

صُمُّۢ بُكۡمٌ عُمۡيٞ فَهُمۡ لَا يَرۡجِعُونَ

Summun bukmun AAumyun fahum la yarjiAAoona

WORD BY WORD
صُمُّۢṣummunDeaf
بُكۡمٌbuk'mundumb
عُمۡيٞʿum'yunblind
فَهُمۡfahumso they
لَاnot
يَرۡجِعُونَyarjiʿūna[they] will not return
TRANSLATION

Deaf, dumb and blind - so they will not return [to the right path]

|||
18

أَوۡ كَصَيِّبٖ مِّنَ ٱلسَّمَآءِ فِيهِ ظُلُمَٰتٞ وَرَعۡدٞ وَبَرۡقٞ يَجۡعَلُونَ أَصَٰبِعَهُمۡ فِيٓ ءَاذَانِهِم مِّنَ ٱلصَّوَٰعِقِ حَذَرَ ٱلۡمَوۡتِۚ وَٱللَّهُ مُحِيطُۢ بِٱلۡكَٰفِرِينَ

Aw kasayyibin mina alssamai feehi thulumatun waraAAdun wabarqun yajAAaloona asabiAAahum fee athanihim mina alssawaAAiqi hathara almawti waAllahu muheetun bialkafireena

أَوۡawOr
كَصَيِّبٖkaṣayyibinlike a rainstorm
مِّنَminafrom
ٱلسَّمَآءِl-samāithe sky
فِيهِfīhiin it (are)
ظُلُمَٰتٞẓulumātundarkness[es]
وَرَعۡدٞwaraʿdunand thunder
وَبَرۡقٞwabarqunand lightning
يَجۡعَلُونَyajʿalūnaThey put
أَصَٰبِعَهُمۡaṣābiʿahumtheir fingers
فِيٓin
ءَاذَانِهِمādhānihimtheir ears
مِّنَminafrom
ٱلصَّوَٰعِقِl-ṣawāʿiqithe thunderclaps
حَذَرَḥadhara(in) fear (of)
ٱلۡمَوۡتِۚl-mawti[the] death
وَٱللَّهُwal-lahuAnd Allah
مُحِيطُۢmuḥīṭun(is) [the One Who] encompasses
بِٱلۡكَٰفِرِينَbil-kāfirīnathe disbelievers
TRANSLATION

Or [it is] like a rainstorm from the sky within which is darkness, thunder and lightning. They put their fingers in their ears against the thunderclaps in dread of death. But Allah is encompassing of the disbelievers

|||
19

يَكَادُ ٱلۡبَرۡقُ يَخۡطَفُ أَبۡصَٰرَهُمۡۖ كُلَّمَآ أَضَآءَ لَهُم مَّشَوۡاْ فِيهِ وَإِذَآ أَظۡلَمَ عَلَيۡهِمۡ قَامُواْۚ وَلَوۡ شَآءَ ٱللَّهُ لَذَهَبَ بِسَمۡعِهِمۡ وَأَبۡصَٰرِهِمۡۚ إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ عَلَىٰ كُلِّ شَيۡءٖ قَدِيرٞ

Yakadu albarqu yakhtafu absarahum kullama adaa lahum mashaw feehi waitha athlama AAalayhim qamoo walaw shaa Allahu lathahaba bisamAAihim waabsarihim inna Allaha AAala kulli shayin qadeerun

يَكَادُyakāduAlmost
ٱلۡبَرۡقُl-barquthe lightning
يَخۡطَفُyakhṭafusnatches away
أَبۡصَٰرَهُمۡۖabṣārahumtheir sight
كُلَّمَآkullamāWhenever
أَضَآءَaḍāait flashes
لَهُمlahumfor them
مَّشَوۡاْmashawthey walk
فِيهِfīhiin it
وَإِذَآwa-idhāand when
أَظۡلَمَaẓlamait darkens
عَلَيۡهِمۡʿalayhimon them
قَامُواْۚqāmūthey stand (still)
وَلَوۡwalawAnd if
شَآءَshāahad willed
ٱللَّهُl-lahuAllah
لَذَهَبَladhahabaHe would certainly have taken away
بِسَمۡعِهِمۡbisamʿihimtheir hearing
وَأَبۡصَٰرِهِمۡۚwa-abṣārihimand their sight
إِنَّinnaIndeed
ٱللَّهَl-lahaAllah
عَلَىٰʿalā(is) on
كُلِّkullievery
شَيۡءٖshayinthing
قَدِيرٞqadīrunAll-Powerful
TRANSLATION

The lightning almost snatches away their sight. Every time it lights [the way] for them, they walk therein; but when darkness comes over them, they stand [still]. And if Allah had willed, He could have taken away their hearing and their sight. Indeed, Allah is over all things competent

|||
20
