ٱقۡتَرَبَ لِلنَّاسِ حِسَابُهُمۡ وَهُمۡ فِي غَفۡلَةٖ مُّعۡرِضُونَ

Iqtaraba lilnnasi hisabuhum wahum fee ghaflatin muAAridoona

WORD BY WORD
ٱقۡتَرَبَiq'taraba(Has) approached
لِلنَّاسِlilnnāsifor [the] mankind
حِسَابُهُمۡḥisābuhumtheir account
وَهُمۡwahumwhile they
فِي(are) in
غَفۡلَةٖghaflatinheedlessness
مُّعۡرِضُونَmuʿ'riḍūnaturning away
TRANSLATION

[The time of] their account has approached for the people, while they are in heedlessness turning away

|||
1

مَا يَأۡتِيهِم مِّن ذِكۡرٖ مِّن رَّبِّهِم مُّحۡدَثٍ إِلَّا ٱسۡتَمَعُوهُ وَهُمۡ يَلۡعَبُونَ

Ma yateehim min thikrin min rabbihim muhdathin illa istamaAAoohu wahum yalAAaboona

WORD BY WORD
مَاNot
يَأۡتِيهِمyatīhimcomes to them
مِّنminof
ذِكۡرٖdhik'rina Reminder
مِّنminfrom
رَّبِّهِمrabbihimtheir Lord
مُّحۡدَثٍmuḥ'dathinanew
إِلَّاillāexcept
ٱسۡتَمَعُوهُis'tamaʿūhuthey listen to it
وَهُمۡwahumwhile they
يَلۡعَبُونَyalʿabūna(are at) play
TRANSLATION

No mention comes to them anew from their Lord except that they listen to it while they are at play

|||
2

لَاهِيَةٗ قُلُوبُهُمۡۗ وَأَسَرُّواْ ٱلنَّجۡوَى ٱلَّذِينَ ظَلَمُواْ هَلۡ هَٰذَآ إِلَّا بَشَرٞ مِّثۡلُكُمۡۖ أَفَتَأۡتُونَ ٱلسِّحۡرَ وَأَنتُمۡ تُبۡصِرُونَ

Lahiyatan quloobuhum waasarroo alnnajwa allatheena thalamoo hal hatha illa basharun mithlukum afatatoona alssihra waantum tubsiroona

WORD BY WORD
لَاهِيَةٗlāhiyatanDistracted
قُلُوبُهُمۡۗqulūbuhumtheir hearts
وَأَسَرُّواْwa-asarrūAnd they conceal
ٱلنَّجۡوَىl-najwāthe private conversation
ٱلَّذِينَalladhīnathose who
ظَلَمُواْẓalamū[they] wronged
هَلۡhalIs
هَٰذَآhādhāthis
إِلَّاillāexcept
بَشَرٞbasharuna human being
مِّثۡلُكُمۡۖmith'lukumlike you
أَفَتَأۡتُونَafatatūnaSo would you approach
ٱلسِّحۡرَl-siḥ'rathe magic
وَأَنتُمۡwa-antumwhile you
تُبۡصِرُونَtub'ṣirūnasee (it)
TRANSLATION

With their hearts distracted. And those who do wrong conceal their private conversation, [saying], "Is this [Prophet] except a human being like you? So would you approach magic while you are aware [of it]

|||
3

قَالَ رَبِّي يَعۡلَمُ ٱلۡقَوۡلَ فِي ٱلسَّمَآءِ وَٱلۡأَرۡضِۖ وَهُوَ ٱلسَّمِيعُ ٱلۡعَلِيمُ

Qala rabbee yaAAlamu alqawla fee alssamai waalardi wahuwa alssameeAAu alAAaleemu

WORD BY WORD
قَالَqālaHe said
رَبِّيrabbīMy Lord
يَعۡلَمُyaʿlamuknows
ٱلۡقَوۡلَl-qawlathe word
فِيin
ٱلسَّمَآءِl-samāithe heavens
وَٱلۡأَرۡضِۖwal-arḍiand the earth
وَهُوَwahuwaAnd He
ٱلسَّمِيعُl-samīʿu(is) the All-Hearer
ٱلۡعَلِيمُl-ʿalīmuthe All-Knower
TRANSLATION

The Prophet said, "My Lord knows whatever is said throughout the heaven and earth, and He is the Hearing, the Knowing

|||
4

بَلۡ قَالُوٓاْ أَضۡغَٰثُ أَحۡلَٰمِۭ بَلِ ٱفۡتَرَىٰهُ بَلۡ هُوَ شَاعِرٞ فَلۡيَأۡتِنَا بِـَٔايَةٖ كَمَآ أُرۡسِلَ ٱلۡأَوَّلُونَ

Bal qaloo adghathu ahlamin bali iftarahu bal huwa shaAAirun falyatina biayatin kama orsila alawwaloona

WORD BY WORD
بَلۡbalNay
قَالُوٓاْqālūthey say
أَضۡغَٰثُaḍghāthuMuddled
أَحۡلَٰمِۭaḥlāmindreams
بَلِbalinay
ٱفۡتَرَىٰهُif'tarāhuhe (has) invented it
بَلۡbalnay
هُوَhuwahe
شَاعِرٞshāʿirun(is) a poet
فَلۡيَأۡتِنَاfalyatināSo let him bring us
بِـَٔايَةٖbiāyatina sign
كَمَآkamālike what
أُرۡسِلَur'silawas sent
ٱلۡأَوَّلُونَl-awalūna(to) the former
TRANSLATION

But they say, "[The revelation is but] a mixture of false dreams; rather, he has invented it; rather, he is a poet. So let him bring us a sign just as the previous [messengers] were sent [with miracles]

|||
5

مَآ ءَامَنَتۡ قَبۡلَهُم مِّن قَرۡيَةٍ أَهۡلَكۡنَٰهَآۖ أَفَهُمۡ يُؤۡمِنُونَ

Ma amanat qablahum min qaryatin ahlaknaha afahum yuminoona

WORD BY WORD
مَآNot
ءَامَنَتۡāmanatbelieved
قَبۡلَهُمqablahumbefore them
مِّنminany
قَرۡيَةٍqaryatintown
أَهۡلَكۡنَٰهَآۖahlaknāhāwhich We destroyed
أَفَهُمۡafahumso will they
يُؤۡمِنُونَyu'minūnabelieve
TRANSLATION

Not a [single] city which We destroyed believed before them, so will they believe

|||
6

وَمَآ أَرۡسَلۡنَا قَبۡلَكَ إِلَّا رِجَالٗا نُّوحِيٓ إِلَيۡهِمۡۖ فَسۡـَٔلُوٓاْ أَهۡلَ ٱلذِّكۡرِ إِن كُنتُمۡ لَا تَعۡلَمُونَ

Wama arsalna qablaka illa rijalan noohee ilayhim faisaloo ahla alththikri in kuntum la taAAlamoona

WORD BY WORD
وَمَآwamāAnd not
أَرۡسَلۡنَاarsalnāWe sent
قَبۡلَكَqablakabefore you
إِلَّاillāexcept
رِجَالٗاrijālanmen
نُّوحِيٓnūḥīWe revealed
إِلَيۡهِمۡۖilayhimto them
فَسۡـَٔلُوٓاْfasalūSo ask
أَهۡلَahla(the) people
ٱلذِّكۡرِl-dhik'ri(of) the Reminder
إِنinif
كُنتُمۡkuntumyou
لَا(do) not
تَعۡلَمُونَtaʿlamūnaknow
TRANSLATION

And We sent not before you, [O Muhammad], except men to whom We revealed [the message], so ask the people of the message if you do not know

|||
7

وَمَا جَعَلۡنَٰهُمۡ جَسَدٗا لَّا يَأۡكُلُونَ ٱلطَّعَامَ وَمَا كَانُواْ خَٰلِدِينَ

Wama jaAAalnahum jasadan la yakuloona alttaAAama wama kanoo khalideena

WORD BY WORD
وَمَاwamāAnd not
جَعَلۡنَٰهُمۡjaʿalnāhumWe made them
جَسَدٗاjasadanbodies
لَّاnot
يَأۡكُلُونَyakulūnaeating
ٱلطَّعَامَl-ṭaʿāmathe food
وَمَاwamāand not
كَانُواْkānūthey were
خَٰلِدِينَkhālidīnaimmortals
TRANSLATION

And We did not make the prophets forms not eating food, nor were they immortal [on earth]

|||
8

ثُمَّ صَدَقۡنَٰهُمُ ٱلۡوَعۡدَ فَأَنجَيۡنَٰهُمۡ وَمَن نَّشَآءُ وَأَهۡلَكۡنَا ٱلۡمُسۡرِفِينَ

Thumma sadaqnahumu alwaAAda faanjaynahum waman nashao waahlakna almusrifeena

WORD BY WORD
ثُمَّthummaThen
صَدَقۡنَٰهُمُṣadaqnāhumuWe fulfilled (for) them
ٱلۡوَعۡدَl-waʿdathe promise
فَأَنجَيۡنَٰهُمۡfa-anjaynāhumand We saved them
وَمَنwamanand whom
نَّشَآءُnashāuWe willed
وَأَهۡلَكۡنَاwa-ahlaknāand We destroyed
ٱلۡمُسۡرِفِينَl-mus'rifīnathe transgressors
TRANSLATION

Then We fulfilled for them the promise, and We saved them and whom We willed and destroyed the transgressors

|||
9

لَقَدۡ أَنزَلۡنَآ إِلَيۡكُمۡ كِتَٰبٗا فِيهِ ذِكۡرُكُمۡۚ أَفَلَا تَعۡقِلُونَ

Laqad anzalna ilaykum kitaban feehi thikrukum afala taAAqiloona

WORD BY WORD
لَقَدۡlaqadIndeed
أَنزَلۡنَآanzalnāWe (have) sent down
إِلَيۡكُمۡilaykumto you
كِتَٰبٗاkitābana Book
فِيهِfīhiin it
ذِكۡرُكُمۡۚdhik'rukum(is) your mention
أَفَلَاafalāThen will not
تَعۡقِلُونَtaʿqilūnayou use reason
TRANSLATION

We have certainly sent down to you a Book in which is your mention. Then will you not reason

|||
10

وَكَمۡ قَصَمۡنَا مِن قَرۡيَةٖ كَانَتۡ ظَالِمَةٗ وَأَنشَأۡنَا بَعۡدَهَا قَوۡمًا ءَاخَرِينَ

Wakam qasamna min qaryatin kanat thalimatan waanshana baAAdaha qawman akhareena

WORD BY WORD
وَكَمۡwakamAnd how many
قَصَمۡنَاqaṣamnāWe (have) shattered
مِنminof
قَرۡيَةٖqaryatina town
كَانَتۡkānat(that) was
ظَالِمَةٗẓālimatanunjust
وَأَنشَأۡنَاwa-anshanāand We produced
بَعۡدَهَاbaʿdahāafter them
قَوۡمًاqawmananother people
ءَاخَرِينَākharīnaanother people
TRANSLATION

And how many a city which was unjust have We shattered and produced after it another people

|||
11

فَلَمَّآ أَحَسُّواْ بَأۡسَنَآ إِذَا هُم مِّنۡهَا يَرۡكُضُونَ

Falamma ahassoo basana itha hum minha yarkudoona

WORD BY WORD
فَلَمَّآfalammāThen when
أَحَسُّواْaḥassūthey perceived
بَأۡسَنَآbasanāOur torment
إِذَاidhābehold
هُمhumthey
مِّنۡهَاmin'hāfrom it
يَرۡكُضُونَyarkuḍūnawere fleeing
TRANSLATION

And when its inhabitants perceived Our punishment, at once they fled from it

|||
12

لَا تَرۡكُضُواْ وَٱرۡجِعُوٓاْ إِلَىٰ مَآ أُتۡرِفۡتُمۡ فِيهِ وَمَسَٰكِنِكُمۡ لَعَلَّكُمۡ تُسۡـَٔلُونَ

La tarkudoo wairjiAAoo ila ma otriftum feehi wamasakinikum laAAallakum tusaloona

WORD BY WORD
لَاFlee not
تَرۡكُضُواْtarkuḍūFlee not
وَٱرۡجِعُوٓاْwa-ir'jiʿūbut return
إِلَىٰilāto
مَآwhat
أُتۡرِفۡتُمۡut'rif'tumyou were given luxury
فِيهِfīhiin it
وَمَسَٰكِنِكُمۡwamasākinikumand to your homes
لَعَلَّكُمۡlaʿallakumso that you may
تُسۡـَٔلُونَtus'alūnabe questioned
TRANSLATION

[Some angels said], "Do not flee but return to where you were given luxury and to your homes - perhaps you will be questioned

|||
13

قَالُواْ يَٰوَيۡلَنَآ إِنَّا كُنَّا ظَٰلِمِينَ

Qaloo ya waylana inna kunna thalimeena

WORD BY WORD
قَالُواْqālūThey said
يَٰوَيۡلَنَآyāwaylanāO woe to us
إِنَّاinnāIndeed, [we]
كُنَّاkunnāwe were
ظَٰلِمِينَẓālimīnawrongdoers
TRANSLATION

They said, "O woe to us! Indeed, we were wrongdoers

|||
14

فَمَا زَالَت تِّلۡكَ دَعۡوَىٰهُمۡ حَتَّىٰ جَعَلۡنَٰهُمۡ حَصِيدًا خَٰمِدِينَ

Fama zalat tilka daAAwahum hatta jaAAalnahum haseedan khamideena

WORD BY WORD
فَمَاfamāThen not
زَالَتzālatceased
تِّلۡكَtil'ka[this]
دَعۡوَىٰهُمۡdaʿwāhumtheir cry
حَتَّىٰḥattāuntil
جَعَلۡنَٰهُمۡjaʿalnāhumWe made them
حَصِيدًاḥaṣīdanreaped
خَٰمِدِينَkhāmidīnaextinct
TRANSLATION

And that declaration of theirs did not cease until We made them [as] a harvest [mowed down], extinguished [like a fire]

|||
15

وَمَا خَلَقۡنَا ٱلسَّمَآءَ وَٱلۡأَرۡضَ وَمَا بَيۡنَهُمَا لَٰعِبِينَ

Wama khalaqna alssamaa waalarda wama baynahuma laAAibeena

WORD BY WORD
وَمَاwamāAnd not
خَلَقۡنَاkhalaqnāWe created
ٱلسَّمَآءَl-samāathe heavens
وَٱلۡأَرۡضَwal-arḍaand the earth
وَمَاwamāand what
بَيۡنَهُمَاbaynahumā(is) between them
لَٰعِبِينَlāʿibīna(for) playing
TRANSLATION

And We did not create the heaven and earth and that between them in play

|||
16

لَوۡ أَرَدۡنَآ أَن نَّتَّخِذَ لَهۡوٗا لَّٱتَّخَذۡنَٰهُ مِن لَّدُنَّآ إِن كُنَّا فَٰعِلِينَ

Law aradna an nattakhitha lahwan laittakhathnahu min ladunna in kunna faAAileena

WORD BY WORD
لَوۡlawIf
أَرَدۡنَآaradnāWe intended
أَنanthat
نَّتَّخِذَnattakhidhaWe take
لَهۡوٗاlahwana pastime
لَّٱتَّخَذۡنَٰهُla-ittakhadhnāhusurely We (could have) taken it
مِنminfrom
لَّدُنَّآladunnāUs
إِنinif
كُنَّاkunnāWe were
فَٰعِلِينَfāʿilīnadoers
TRANSLATION

Had We intended to take a diversion, We could have taken it from [what is] with Us - if [indeed] We were to do so

|||
17

بَلۡ نَقۡذِفُ بِٱلۡحَقِّ عَلَى ٱلۡبَٰطِلِ فَيَدۡمَغُهُۥ فَإِذَا هُوَ زَاهِقٞۚ وَلَكُمُ ٱلۡوَيۡلُ مِمَّا تَصِفُونَ

Bal naqthifu bialhaqqi AAala albatili fayadmaghuhu faitha huwa zahiqun walakumu alwaylu mimma tasifoona

WORD BY WORD
بَلۡbalNay
نَقۡذِفُnaqdhifuWe hurl
بِٱلۡحَقِّbil-ḥaqithe truth
عَلَىʿalāagainst
ٱلۡبَٰطِلِl-bāṭili[the] falsehood
فَيَدۡمَغُهُۥfayadmaghuhuand it breaks its head
فَإِذَاfa-idhābehold
هُوَhuwait (is)
زَاهِقٞۚzāhiqunvanishing
وَلَكُمُwalakumuAnd for you
ٱلۡوَيۡلُl-waylu(is) destruction
مِمَّاmimmāfor what
تَصِفُونَtaṣifūnayou ascribe
TRANSLATION

Rather, We dash the truth upon falsehood, and it destroys it, and thereupon it departs. And for you is destruction from that which you describe

|||
18

وَلَهُۥ مَن فِي ٱلسَّمَٰوَٰتِ وَٱلۡأَرۡضِۚ وَمَنۡ عِندَهُۥ لَا يَسۡتَكۡبِرُونَ عَنۡ عِبَادَتِهِۦ وَلَا يَسۡتَحۡسِرُونَ

Walahu man fee alssamawati waalardi waman AAindahu la yastakbiroona AAan AAibadatihi wala yastahsiroona

WORD BY WORD
وَلَهُۥwalahuAnd to Him (belongs)
مَنmanwhoever
فِي(is) in
ٱلسَّمَٰوَٰتِl-samāwātithe heavens
وَٱلۡأَرۡضِۚwal-arḍiand the earth
وَمَنۡwamanAnd (those) who
عِندَهُۥʿindahu(are) near Him
لَاnot
يَسۡتَكۡبِرُونَyastakbirūnathey are arrogant
عَنۡʿanto
عِبَادَتِهِۦʿibādatihiworship Him
وَلَاwalāand not
يَسۡتَحۡسِرُونَyastaḥsirūnathey tire
TRANSLATION

To Him belongs whoever is in the heavens and the earth. And those near Him are not prevented by arrogance from His worship, nor do they tire

|||
19

يُسَبِّحُونَ ٱلَّيۡلَ وَٱلنَّهَارَ لَا يَفۡتُرُونَ

Yusabbihoona allayla waalnnahara la yafturoona

WORD BY WORD
يُسَبِّحُونَyusabbiḥūnaThey glorify (Him)
ٱلَّيۡلَal-layla[the] night
وَٱلنَّهَارَwal-nahāraand [the] day
لَاnot
يَفۡتُرُونَyafturūnathey slacken
TRANSLATION

They exalt [Him] night and day [and] do not slacken

|||
20
