Ha, Meem

|||
1

تَنزِيلٞ مِّنَ ٱلرَّحۡمَٰنِ ٱلرَّحِيمِ

Tanzeelun mina alrrahmani alrraheemi

WORD BY WORD
تَنزِيلٞtanzīlunA revelation
مِّنَminafrom
ٱلرَّحۡمَٰنِl-raḥmānithe Most Gracious
ٱلرَّحِيمِl-raḥīmithe Most Merciful
TRANSLATION

[This is] a revelation from the Entirely Merciful, the Especially Merciful

|||
2

كِتَٰبٞ فُصِّلَتۡ ءَايَٰتُهُۥ قُرۡءَانًا عَرَبِيّٗا لِّقَوۡمٖ يَعۡلَمُونَ

Kitabun fussilat ayatuhu quranan AAarabiyyan liqawmin yaAAlamoona

كِتَٰبٞkitābunA Book
فُصِّلَتۡfuṣṣilatare detailed
ءَايَٰتُهُۥāyātuhuits Verses
قُرۡءَانًاqur'ānana Quran
عَرَبِيّٗاʿarabiyyan(in) Arabic
لِّقَوۡمٖliqawminfor a people
يَعۡلَمُونَyaʿlamūna(who) know
TRANSLATION

A Book whose verses have been detailed, an Arabic Qur'an for a people who know

|||
3

بَشِيرٗا وَنَذِيرٗا فَأَعۡرَضَ أَكۡثَرُهُمۡ فَهُمۡ لَا يَسۡمَعُونَ

Basheeran wanatheeran faaAArada aktharuhum fahum la yasmaAAoona

WORD BY WORD
بَشِيرٗاbashīranA giver of glad tidings
وَنَذِيرٗاwanadhīranand a warner
فَأَعۡرَضَfa-aʿraḍabut turn away
أَكۡثَرُهُمۡaktharuhummost of them
فَهُمۡfahumso they
لَا(do) not
يَسۡمَعُونَyasmaʿūnahear
TRANSLATION

As a giver of good tidings and a warner; but most of them turn away, so they do not hear

|||
4

وَقَالُواْ قُلُوبُنَا فِيٓ أَكِنَّةٖ مِّمَّا تَدۡعُونَآ إِلَيۡهِ وَفِيٓ ءَاذَانِنَا وَقۡرٞ وَمِنۢ بَيۡنِنَا وَبَيۡنِكَ حِجَابٞ فَٱعۡمَلۡ إِنَّنَا عَٰمِلُونَ

Waqaloo quloobuna fee akinnatin mimma tadAAoona ilayhi wafee athanina waqrun wamin baynina wabaynika hijabun faiAAmal innana AAamiloona

وَقَالُواْwaqālūAnd they say
قُلُوبُنَاqulūbunāOur hearts
فِيٓ(are) in
أَكِنَّةٖakinnatincoverings
مِّمَّاmimmāfrom what
تَدۡعُونَآtadʿūnāyou call us
إِلَيۡهِilayhito it
وَفِيٓwafīand in
ءَاذَانِنَاādhānināour ears
وَقۡرٞwaqrun(is) deafness
وَمِنۢwaminand between us
بَيۡنِنَاbaynināand between us
وَبَيۡنِكَwabaynikaand between you
حِجَابٞḥijābun(is) a screen
فَٱعۡمَلۡfa-iʿ'malSo work
إِنَّنَاinnanāindeed, we
عَٰمِلُونَʿāmilūna(are) working
TRANSLATION

And they say, "Our hearts are within coverings from that to which you invite us, and in our ears is deafness, and between us and you is a partition, so work; indeed, we are working

|||
5

قُلۡ إِنَّمَآ أَنَا۠ بَشَرٞ مِّثۡلُكُمۡ يُوحَىٰٓ إِلَيَّ أَنَّمَآ إِلَٰهُكُمۡ إِلَٰهٞ وَٰحِدٞ فَٱسۡتَقِيمُوٓاْ إِلَيۡهِ وَٱسۡتَغۡفِرُوهُۗ وَوَيۡلٞ لِّلۡمُشۡرِكِينَ

Qul innama ana basharun mithlukum yooha ilayya annama ilahukum ilahun wahidun faistaqeemoo ilayhi waistaghfiroohu wawaylun lilmushrikeena

قُلۡqulSay
إِنَّمَآinnamāOnly
أَنَا۠anāI am
بَشَرٞbasharuna man
مِّثۡلُكُمۡmith'lukumlike you
يُوحَىٰٓyūḥāit is revealed
إِلَيَّilayyato me
أَنَّمَآannamāthat
إِلَٰهُكُمۡilāhukumyour god
إِلَٰهٞilāhun(is) God
وَٰحِدٞwāḥidunOne
فَٱسۡتَقِيمُوٓاْfa-is'taqīmūso take a Straight Path
إِلَيۡهِilayhito Him
وَٱسۡتَغۡفِرُوهُۗwa-is'taghfirūhuand ask His forgiveness
وَوَيۡلٞwawaylunAnd woe
لِّلۡمُشۡرِكِينَlil'mush'rikīnato the polytheists
TRANSLATION

Say, O [Muhammad], "I am only a man like you to whom it has been revealed that your god is but one God; so take a straight course to Him and seek His forgiveness." And woe to those who associate others with Allah

|||
6

ٱلَّذِينَ لَا يُؤۡتُونَ ٱلزَّكَوٰةَ وَهُم بِٱلۡأٓخِرَةِ هُمۡ كَٰفِرُونَ

Allatheena la yutoona alzzakata wahum bialakhirati hum kafiroona

WORD BY WORD
ٱلَّذِينَalladhīnaThose who
لَا(do) not
يُؤۡتُونَyu'tūnagive
ٱلزَّكَوٰةَl-zakatathe zakah
وَهُمwahumand they
بِٱلۡأٓخِرَةِbil-ākhiratiin the Hereafter
هُمۡhumthey
كَٰفِرُونَkāfirūna(are) disbelievers
TRANSLATION

Those who do not give zakah, and in the Hereafter they are disbelievers

|||
7

إِنَّ ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُواْ وَعَمِلُواْ ٱلصَّـٰلِحَٰتِ لَهُمۡ أَجۡرٌ غَيۡرُ مَمۡنُونٖ

Inna allatheena amanoo waAAamiloo alssalihati lahum ajrun ghayru mamnoonin

WORD BY WORD
إِنَّinnaIndeed
ٱلَّذِينَalladhīnathose who
ءَامَنُواْāmanūbelieve
وَعَمِلُواْwaʿamilūand do
ٱلصَّـٰلِحَٰتِl-ṣāliḥātirighteous deeds
لَهُمۡlahumfor them
أَجۡرٌajrun(is) a reward
غَيۡرُghayrunever ending
مَمۡنُونٖmamnūninnever ending
TRANSLATION

Indeed, those who believe and do righteous deeds - for them is a reward uninterrupted

|||
8

۞قُلۡ أَئِنَّكُمۡ لَتَكۡفُرُونَ بِٱلَّذِي خَلَقَ ٱلۡأَرۡضَ فِي يَوۡمَيۡنِ وَتَجۡعَلُونَ لَهُۥٓ أَندَادٗاۚ ذَٰلِكَ رَبُّ ٱلۡعَٰلَمِينَ

Qul ainnakum latakfuroona biallathee khalaqa alarda fee yawmayni watajAAaloona lahu andadan thalika rabbu alAAalameena

۞قُلۡqulSay
أَئِنَّكُمۡa-innakumDo you indeed
لَتَكۡفُرُونَlatakfurūna[surely] disbelieve
بِٱلَّذِيbi-alladhīin the One Who
خَلَقَkhalaqacreated
ٱلۡأَرۡضَl-arḍathe earth
فِيin
يَوۡمَيۡنِyawmaynitwo periods
وَتَجۡعَلُونَwatajʿalūnaand you set up
لَهُۥٓlahuwith Him
أَندَادٗاۚandādanrivals
ذَٰلِكَdhālikaThat
رَبُّrabbu(is the) Lord
ٱلۡعَٰلَمِينَl-ʿālamīna(of) the worlds
TRANSLATION

Say, "Do you indeed disbelieve in He who created the earth in two days and attribute to Him equals? That is the Lord of the worlds

|||
9

وَجَعَلَ فِيهَا رَوَٰسِيَ مِن فَوۡقِهَا وَبَٰرَكَ فِيهَا وَقَدَّرَ فِيهَآ أَقۡوَٰتَهَا فِيٓ أَرۡبَعَةِ أَيَّامٖ سَوَآءٗ لِّلسَّآئِلِينَ

WajaAAala feeha rawasiya min fawqiha wabaraka feeha waqaddara feeha aqwataha fee arbaAAati ayyamin sawaan lilssaileena

وَجَعَلَwajaʿalaAnd He placed
فِيهَاfīhātherein
رَوَٰسِيَrawāsiyafirmly-set mountains
مِنminabove it
فَوۡقِهَاfawqihāabove it
وَبَٰرَكَwabārakaand He blessed
فِيهَاfīhātherein
وَقَدَّرَwaqaddaraand determined
فِيهَآfīhātherein
أَقۡوَٰتَهَاaqwātahāits sustenance
فِيٓin
أَرۡبَعَةِarbaʿatifour
أَيَّامٖayyāminperiods
سَوَآءٗsawāanequal
لِّلسَّآئِلِينَlilssāilīnafor those who ask
TRANSLATION

And He placed on the earth firmly set mountains over its surface, and He blessed it and determined therein its [creatures'] sustenance in four days without distinction - for [the information] of those who ask

|||
10

ثُمَّ ٱسۡتَوَىٰٓ إِلَى ٱلسَّمَآءِ وَهِيَ دُخَانٞ فَقَالَ لَهَا وَلِلۡأَرۡضِ ٱئۡتِيَا طَوۡعًا أَوۡ كَرۡهٗا قَالَتَآ أَتَيۡنَا طَآئِعِينَ

Thumma istawa ila alssamai wahiya dukhanun faqala laha walilardi itiya tawAAan aw karhan qalata atayna taiAAeena

ثُمَّthummaThen
ٱسۡتَوَىٰٓis'tawāHe directed (Himself)
إِلَىilātowards
ٱلسَّمَآءِl-samāithe heaven
وَهِيَwahiyawhile it (was)
دُخَانٞdukhānunsmoke
فَقَالَfaqālaand He said
لَهَاlahāto it
وَلِلۡأَرۡضِwalil'arḍiand to the earth
ٱئۡتِيَاi'tiyāCome both of you
طَوۡعًاṭawʿanwillingly
أَوۡawor
كَرۡهٗاkarhanunwillingly
قَالَتَآqālatāThey both said
أَتَيۡنَاataynāWe come
طَآئِعِينَṭāiʿīnawillingly
TRANSLATION

Then He directed Himself to the heaven while it was smoke and said to it and to the earth, "Come [into being], willingly or by compulsion." They said, "We have come willingly

|||
11

فَقَضَىٰهُنَّ سَبۡعَ سَمَٰوَاتٖ فِي يَوۡمَيۡنِ وَأَوۡحَىٰ فِي كُلِّ سَمَآءٍ أَمۡرَهَاۚ وَزَيَّنَّا ٱلسَّمَآءَ ٱلدُّنۡيَا بِمَصَٰبِيحَ وَحِفۡظٗاۚ ذَٰلِكَ تَقۡدِيرُ ٱلۡعَزِيزِ ٱلۡعَلِيمِ

Faqadahunna sabAAa samawatin fee yawmayni waawha fee kulli samain amraha wazayyanna alssamaa alddunya bimasabeeha wahifthan thalika taqdeeru alAAazeezi alAAaleemi

فَقَضَىٰهُنَّfaqaḍāhunnaThen He completed them
سَبۡعَsabʿa(as) seven
سَمَٰوَاتٖsamāwātinheavens
فِيin
يَوۡمَيۡنِyawmaynitwo periods
وَأَوۡحَىٰwa-awḥāand He revealed
فِيin
كُلِّkullieach
سَمَآءٍsamāinheaven
أَمۡرَهَاۚamrahāits affair
وَزَيَّنَّاwazayyannāAnd We adorned
ٱلسَّمَآءَl-samāathe heaven
ٱلدُّنۡيَاl-dun'yā[the world]
بِمَصَٰبِيحَbimaṣābīḥawith lamps
وَحِفۡظٗاۚwaḥif'ẓanand (to) guard
ذَٰلِكَdhālikaThat
تَقۡدِيرُtaqdīru(is the) Decree
ٱلۡعَزِيزِl-ʿazīzi(of) the All-Mighty
ٱلۡعَلِيمِl-ʿalīmithe All-Knower
TRANSLATION

And He completed them as seven heavens within two days and inspired in each heaven its command. And We adorned the nearest heaven with lamps and as protection. That is the determination of the Exalted in Might, the Knowing

|||
12

فَإِنۡ أَعۡرَضُواْ فَقُلۡ أَنذَرۡتُكُمۡ صَٰعِقَةٗ مِّثۡلَ صَٰعِقَةِ عَادٖ وَثَمُودَ

Fain aAAradoo fuqul anthartukum saAAiqatan mithla saAAiqati AAadin wathamooda

WORD BY WORD
فَإِنۡfa-inBut if
أَعۡرَضُواْaʿraḍūthey turn away
فَقُلۡfaqulthen say
أَنذَرۡتُكُمۡandhartukumI have warned you
صَٰعِقَةٗṣāʿiqatan(of) a thunderbolt
مِّثۡلَmith'lalike
صَٰعِقَةِṣāʿiqati(the) thunderbolt
عَادٖʿādin(of) Aad
وَثَمُودَwathamūdaand Thamud
TRANSLATION

But if they turn away, then say, "I have warned you of a thunderbolt like the thunderbolt [that struck] 'Aad and Thamud

|||
13

إِذۡ جَآءَتۡهُمُ ٱلرُّسُلُ مِنۢ بَيۡنِ أَيۡدِيهِمۡ وَمِنۡ خَلۡفِهِمۡ أَلَّا تَعۡبُدُوٓاْ إِلَّا ٱللَّهَۖ قَالُواْ لَوۡ شَآءَ رَبُّنَا لَأَنزَلَ مَلَـٰٓئِكَةٗ فَإِنَّا بِمَآ أُرۡسِلۡتُم بِهِۦ كَٰفِرُونَ

Ith jaathumu alrrusulu min bayni aydeehim wamin khalfihim alla taAAbudoo illa Allaha qaloo law shaa rabbuna laanzala malaikatan fainna bima orsiltum bihi kafiroona

WORD BY WORD
إِذۡidhWhen
جَآءَتۡهُمُjāathumucame to them
ٱلرُّسُلُl-rusuluthe Messengers
مِنۢminfrom before them
بَيۡنِbaynifrom before them
أَيۡدِيهِمۡaydīhimfrom before them
وَمِنۡwaminand from
خَلۡفِهِمۡkhalfihimbehind them
أَلَّاallā(saying) "Do not
تَعۡبُدُوٓاْtaʿbudūworship
إِلَّاillāexcept
ٱللَّهَۖl-lahaAllah
قَالُواْqālūThey said
لَوۡlawIf
شَآءَshāa(had) willed
رَبُّنَاrabbunāour Lord
لَأَنزَلَla-anzalasurely, He (would have) sent down
مَلَـٰٓئِكَةٗmalāikatanAngels
فَإِنَّاfa-innāSo indeed, we
بِمَآbimāin what
أُرۡسِلۡتُمur'sil'tumyou have been sent
بِهِۦbihiwith
كَٰفِرُونَkāfirūna(are) disbelievers
TRANSLATION

[That occurred] when the messengers had come to them before them and after them, [saying], "Worship not except Allah." They said, "If our Lord had willed, He would have sent down the angels, so indeed we, in that with which you have been sent, are disbelievers

|||
14

فَأَمَّا عَادٞ فَٱسۡتَكۡبَرُواْ فِي ٱلۡأَرۡضِ بِغَيۡرِ ٱلۡحَقِّ وَقَالُواْ مَنۡ أَشَدُّ مِنَّا قُوَّةًۖ أَوَلَمۡ يَرَوۡاْ أَنَّ ٱللَّهَ ٱلَّذِي خَلَقَهُمۡ هُوَ أَشَدُّ مِنۡهُمۡ قُوَّةٗۖ وَكَانُواْ بِـَٔايَٰتِنَا يَجۡحَدُونَ

Faamma AAadun faistakbaroo fee alardi bighayri alhaqqi waqaloo man ashaddu minna quwwatan awalam yaraw anna Allaha allathee khalaqahum huwa ashaddu minhum quwwatan wakanoo biayatina yajhadoona

فَأَمَّاfa-ammāThen as for
عَادٞʿādunAad
فَٱسۡتَكۡبَرُواْfa-is'takbarūthey were arrogant
فِيin
ٱلۡأَرۡضِl-arḍithe land
بِغَيۡرِbighayriwithout
ٱلۡحَقِّl-ḥaqi[the] right
وَقَالُواْwaqālūand they said
مَنۡmanWho
أَشَدُّashaddu(is) mightier
مِنَّاminnāthan us
قُوَّةًۖquwwatan(in) strength
أَوَلَمۡawalamDo not
يَرَوۡاْyarawthey see
أَنَّannathat
ٱللَّهَl-lahaAllah
ٱلَّذِيalladhīthe One Who
خَلَقَهُمۡkhalaqahumcreated them
هُوَhuwaHe
أَشَدُّashaddu(is) Mightier
مِنۡهُمۡmin'humthan them
قُوَّةٗۖquwwatan(in) strength
وَكَانُواْwakānūBut they used to
بِـَٔايَٰتِنَاbiāyātināin Our Signs
يَجۡحَدُونَyajḥadūnadeny
TRANSLATION

As for 'Aad, they were arrogant upon the earth without right and said, "Who is greater than us in strength?" Did they not consider that Allah who created them was greater than them in strength? But they were rejecting Our signs

|||
15

فَأَرۡسَلۡنَا عَلَيۡهِمۡ رِيحٗا صَرۡصَرٗا فِيٓ أَيَّامٖ نَّحِسَاتٖ لِّنُذِيقَهُمۡ عَذَابَ ٱلۡخِزۡيِ فِي ٱلۡحَيَوٰةِ ٱلدُّنۡيَاۖ وَلَعَذَابُ ٱلۡأٓخِرَةِ أَخۡزَىٰۖ وَهُمۡ لَا يُنصَرُونَ

Faarsalna AAalayhim reehan sarsaran fee ayyamin nahisatin linutheeqahum AAathaba alkhizyi fee alhayati alddunya walaAAathabu alakhirati akhza wahum la yunsaroona

فَأَرۡسَلۡنَاfa-arsalnāSo We sent
عَلَيۡهِمۡʿalayhimupon them
رِيحٗاrīḥana wind
صَرۡصَرٗاṣarṣaranfurious
فِيٓin
أَيَّامٖayyāmin(the) days
نَّحِسَاتٖnaḥisātin(of) misfortune
لِّنُذِيقَهُمۡlinudhīqahumthat We may make them taste
عَذَابَʿadhāba(the) punishment
ٱلۡخِزۡيِl-khiz'yi(of) disgrace
فِيin
ٱلۡحَيَوٰةِl-ḥayatithe life
ٱلدُّنۡيَاۖl-dun'yā(of) the world
وَلَعَذَابُwalaʿadhābuAnd surely, (the) punishment
ٱلۡأٓخِرَةِl-ākhirati(of) the Hereafter
أَخۡزَىٰۖakhzā(is) more disgracing
وَهُمۡwahumand they
لَاwill not be helped
يُنصَرُونَyunṣarūnawill not be helped
TRANSLATION

So We sent upon them a screaming wind during days of misfortune to make them taste the punishment of disgrace in the worldly life; but the punishment of the Hereafter is more disgracing, and they will not be helped

|||
16

وَأَمَّا ثَمُودُ فَهَدَيۡنَٰهُمۡ فَٱسۡتَحَبُّواْ ٱلۡعَمَىٰ عَلَى ٱلۡهُدَىٰ فَأَخَذَتۡهُمۡ صَٰعِقَةُ ٱلۡعَذَابِ ٱلۡهُونِ بِمَا كَانُواْ يَكۡسِبُونَ

Waamma thamoodu fahadaynahum faistahabboo alAAama AAala alhuda faakhathathum saAAiqatu alAAathabi alhooni bima kanoo yaksiboona

وَأَمَّاwa-ammāAnd as for
ثَمُودُthamūduThamud
فَهَدَيۡنَٰهُمۡfahadaynāhumWe guided them
فَٱسۡتَحَبُّواْfa-is'taḥabbūbut they preferred
ٱلۡعَمَىٰl-ʿamā[the] blindness
عَلَىʿalāover
ٱلۡهُدَىٰl-hudāthe guidance
فَأَخَذَتۡهُمۡfa-akhadhathumso seized them
صَٰعِقَةُṣāʿiqatua thunderbolt
ٱلۡعَذَابِl-ʿadhābi(of) the punishment
ٱلۡهُونِl-hūnihumiliating
بِمَاbimāfor what
كَانُواْkānūthey used to
يَكۡسِبُونَyaksibūnaearn
TRANSLATION

And as for Thamud, We guided them, but they preferred blindness over guidance, so the thunderbolt of humiliating punishment seized them for what they used to earn

|||
17

وَنَجَّيۡنَا ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُواْ وَكَانُواْ يَتَّقُونَ

Wanajjayna allatheena amanoo wakanoo yattaqoona

WORD BY WORD
وَنَجَّيۡنَاwanajjaynāAnd We saved
ٱلَّذِينَalladhīnathose who
ءَامَنُواْāmanūbelieved
وَكَانُواْwakānūand used to
يَتَّقُونَyattaqūnafear (Allah)
TRANSLATION

And We saved those who believed and used to fear Allah

|||
18

وَيَوۡمَ يُحۡشَرُ أَعۡدَآءُ ٱللَّهِ إِلَى ٱلنَّارِ فَهُمۡ يُوزَعُونَ

Wayawma yuhsharu aAAdao Allahi ila alnnari fahum yoozaAAoona

WORD BY WORD
وَيَوۡمَwayawmaAnd (the) Day
يُحۡشَرُyuḥ'sharuwill be gathered
أَعۡدَآءُaʿdāu(the) enemies
ٱللَّهِl-lahi(of) Allah
إِلَىilāto
ٱلنَّارِl-nārithe Fire
فَهُمۡfahumthen they
يُوزَعُونَyūzaʿūnawill be assembled in rows
TRANSLATION

And [mention, O Muhammad], the Day when the enemies of Allah will be gathered to the Fire while they are [driven] assembled in rows

|||
19

حَتَّىٰٓ إِذَا مَا جَآءُوهَا شَهِدَ عَلَيۡهِمۡ سَمۡعُهُمۡ وَأَبۡصَٰرُهُمۡ وَجُلُودُهُم بِمَا كَانُواْ يَعۡمَلُونَ

Hatta itha ma jaooha shahida AAalayhim samAAuhum waabsaruhum wajulooduhum bima kanoo yaAAmaloona

حَتَّىٰٓḥattāUntil
إِذَاidhāwhen
مَاwhen
جَآءُوهَاjāūhāthey come to it
شَهِدَshahida(will) testify
عَلَيۡهِمۡʿalayhimagainst them
سَمۡعُهُمۡsamʿuhumtheir hearing
وَأَبۡصَٰرُهُمۡwa-abṣāruhumand their sight
وَجُلُودُهُمwajulūduhumand their skins
بِمَاbimā(as) to what
كَانُواْkānūthey used to
يَعۡمَلُونَyaʿmalūnado
TRANSLATION

Until, when they reach it, their hearing and their eyes and their skins will testify against them of what they used to do
