TRANSLATION

Ha, Meem

|||
1

تَنزِيلُ ٱلۡكِتَٰبِ مِنَ ٱللَّهِ ٱلۡعَزِيزِ ٱلۡحَكِيمِ

Tanzeelu alkitabi mina Allahi alAAazeezi alhakeemi

WORD BY WORD
تَنزِيلُtanzīlu(The) revelation
ٱلۡكِتَٰبِl-kitābi(of) the Book
مِنَmina(is) from
ٱللَّهِl-lahiAllah
ٱلۡعَزِيزِl-ʿazīzithe All-Mighty
ٱلۡحَكِيمِl-ḥakīmithe All-Wise
TRANSLATION

The revelation of the Book is from Allah, the Exalted in Might, the Wise

|||
2

مَا خَلَقۡنَا ٱلسَّمَٰوَٰتِ وَٱلۡأَرۡضَ وَمَا بَيۡنَهُمَآ إِلَّا بِٱلۡحَقِّ وَأَجَلٖ مُّسَمّٗىۚ وَٱلَّذِينَ كَفَرُواْ عَمَّآ أُنذِرُواْ مُعۡرِضُونَ

Ma khalaqna alssamawati waalarda wama baynahuma illa bialhaqqi waajalin musamman waallatheena kafaroo AAamma onthiroo muAAridoona

مَاNot
خَلَقۡنَاkhalaqnāWe created
ٱلسَّمَٰوَٰتِl-samāwātithe heavens
وَٱلۡأَرۡضَwal-arḍaand the earth
وَمَاwamāand what
بَيۡنَهُمَآbaynahumā(is) between both of them
إِلَّاillāexcept
بِٱلۡحَقِّbil-ḥaqiin truth
وَأَجَلٖwa-ajalinand (for) a term
مُّسَمّٗىۚmusammanappointed
وَٱلَّذِينَwa-alladhīnaBut those who
كَفَرُواْkafarūdisbelieve
عَمَّآʿammāfrom what
أُنذِرُواْundhirūthey are warned
مُعۡرِضُونَmuʿ'riḍūna(are) turning away
TRANSLATION

We did not create the heavens and earth and what is between them except in truth and [for] a specified term. But those who disbelieve, from that of which they are warned, are turning away

|||
3

قُلۡ أَرَءَيۡتُم مَّا تَدۡعُونَ مِن دُونِ ٱللَّهِ أَرُونِي مَاذَا خَلَقُواْ مِنَ ٱلۡأَرۡضِ أَمۡ لَهُمۡ شِرۡكٞ فِي ٱلسَّمَٰوَٰتِۖ ٱئۡتُونِي بِكِتَٰبٖ مِّن قَبۡلِ هَٰذَآ أَوۡ أَثَٰرَةٖ مِّنۡ عِلۡمٍ إِن كُنتُمۡ صَٰدِقِينَ

Qul araaytum ma tadAAoona min dooni Allahi aroonee matha khalaqoo mina alardi am lahum shirkun fee alssamawati eetoonee bikitabin min qabli hatha aw atharatin min AAilmin in kuntum sadiqeena

قُلۡqulSay
أَرَءَيۡتُمara-aytumDo you see
مَّاwhat
تَدۡعُونَtadʿūnayou call
مِنminbesides
دُونِdūnibesides
ٱللَّهِl-lahiAllah
أَرُونِيarūnīShow me
مَاذَاmādhāwhat
خَلَقُواْkhalaqūthey have created
مِنَminaof
ٱلۡأَرۡضِl-arḍithe earth
أَمۡamor
لَهُمۡlahumfor them
شِرۡكٞshir'kun(is) any share
فِيin
ٱلسَّمَٰوَٰتِۖl-samāwātithe heavens
ٱئۡتُونِيi'tūnīBring me
بِكِتَٰبٖbikitābina book
مِّنminfrom
قَبۡلِqablibefore
هَٰذَآhādhāthis
أَوۡawor
أَثَٰرَةٖathāratina trace
مِّنۡminof
عِلۡمٍʿil'minknowledge
إِنinif
كُنتُمۡkuntumyou are
صَٰدِقِينَṣādiqīnatruthful
TRANSLATION

Say, [O Muhammad], "Have you considered that which you invoke besides Allah? Show me what they have created of the earth; or did they have partnership in [creation of] the heavens? Bring me a scripture [revealed] before this or a [remaining] trace of knowledge, if you should be truthful

|||
4

وَمَنۡ أَضَلُّ مِمَّن يَدۡعُواْ مِن دُونِ ٱللَّهِ مَن لَّا يَسۡتَجِيبُ لَهُۥٓ إِلَىٰ يَوۡمِ ٱلۡقِيَٰمَةِ وَهُمۡ عَن دُعَآئِهِمۡ غَٰفِلُونَ

Waman adallu mimman yadAAoo min dooni Allahi man la yastajeebu lahu ila yawmi alqiyamati wahum AAan duAAaihim ghafiloona

وَمَنۡwamanAnd who
أَضَلُّaḍallu(is) more astray
مِمَّنmimmanthan (he) who
يَدۡعُواْyadʿūcalls
مِنminbesides
دُونِdūnibesides
ٱللَّهِl-lahiAllah
مَنmanwho
لَّاwill not respond
يَسۡتَجِيبُyastajībuwill not respond
لَهُۥٓlahuto him
إِلَىٰilāuntil
يَوۡمِyawmi(the) Day
ٱلۡقِيَٰمَةِl-qiyāmati(of) Resurrection
وَهُمۡwahumand they
عَنʿanof
دُعَآئِهِمۡduʿāihimtheir calls
غَٰفِلُونَghāfilūna(are) unaware
TRANSLATION

And who is more astray than he who invokes besides Allah those who will not respond to him until the Day of Resurrection, and they, of their invocation, are unaware

|||
5

وَإِذَا حُشِرَ ٱلنَّاسُ كَانُواْ لَهُمۡ أَعۡدَآءٗ وَكَانُواْ بِعِبَادَتِهِمۡ كَٰفِرِينَ

Waitha hushira alnnasu kanoo lahum aAAdaan wakanoo biAAibadatihim kafireena

WORD BY WORD
وَإِذَاwa-idhāAnd when
حُشِرَḥushiraare gathered
ٱلنَّاسُl-nāsuthe people
كَانُواْkānūthey will be
لَهُمۡlahumfor them
أَعۡدَآءٗaʿdāanenemies
وَكَانُواْwakānūand they will be
بِعِبَادَتِهِمۡbiʿibādatihimof their worship
كَٰفِرِينَkāfirīnadeniers
TRANSLATION

And when the people are gathered [that Day], they [who were invoked] will be enemies to them, and they will be deniers of their worship

|||
6

وَإِذَا تُتۡلَىٰ عَلَيۡهِمۡ ءَايَٰتُنَا بَيِّنَٰتٖ قَالَ ٱلَّذِينَ كَفَرُواْ لِلۡحَقِّ لَمَّا جَآءَهُمۡ هَٰذَا سِحۡرٞ مُّبِينٌ

Waitha tutla AAalayhim ayatuna bayyinatin qala allatheena kafaroo lilhaqqi lamma jaahum hatha sihrun mubeenun

WORD BY WORD
وَإِذَاwa-idhāAnd when
تُتۡلَىٰtut'lāare recited
عَلَيۡهِمۡʿalayhimto them
ءَايَٰتُنَاāyātunāOur Verses
بَيِّنَٰتٖbayyinātinclear
قَالَqālasay
ٱلَّذِينَalladhīnathose who
كَفَرُواْkafarūdisbelieve
لِلۡحَقِّlil'ḥaqqiof the truth
لَمَّاlammāwhen
جَآءَهُمۡjāahumit comes to them
هَٰذَاhādhāThis
سِحۡرٞsiḥ'run(is) a magic
مُّبِينٌmubīnunclear
TRANSLATION

And when Our verses are recited to them as clear evidences, those who disbelieve say of the truth when it has come to them, "This is obvious magic

|||
7

أَمۡ يَقُولُونَ ٱفۡتَرَىٰهُۖ قُلۡ إِنِ ٱفۡتَرَيۡتُهُۥ فَلَا تَمۡلِكُونَ لِي مِنَ ٱللَّهِ شَيۡـًٔاۖ هُوَ أَعۡلَمُ بِمَا تُفِيضُونَ فِيهِۚ كَفَىٰ بِهِۦ شَهِيدَۢا بَيۡنِي وَبَيۡنَكُمۡۖ وَهُوَ ٱلۡغَفُورُ ٱلرَّحِيمُ

Am yaqooloona iftarahu qul ini iftaraytuhu fala tamlikoona lee mina Allahi shayan huwa aAAlamu bima tufeedoona feehi kafa bihi shaheedan baynee wabaynakum wahuwa alghafooru alrraheemu

أَمۡamOr
يَقُولُونَyaqūlūnathey say
ٱفۡتَرَىٰهُۖif'tarāhuHe has invented it
قُلۡqulSay
إِنِiniIf
ٱفۡتَرَيۡتُهُۥif'taraytuhuI have invented it
فَلَاfalāthen not
تَمۡلِكُونَtamlikūnayou have power
لِيfor me
مِنَminaagainst
ٱللَّهِl-lahiAllah
شَيۡـًٔاۖshayananything
هُوَhuwaHe
أَعۡلَمُaʿlamuknows best
بِمَاbimāof what
تُفِيضُونَtufīḍūnayou utter
فِيهِۚfīhiconcerning it
كَفَىٰkafāSufficient is He
بِهِۦbihiSufficient is He
شَهِيدَۢاshahīdan(as) a Witness
بَيۡنِيbaynībetween me
وَبَيۡنَكُمۡۖwabaynakumand between you
وَهُوَwahuwaand He
ٱلۡغَفُورُl-ghafūru(is) the Oft-Forgiving
ٱلرَّحِيمُl-raḥīmuthe Most Merciful
TRANSLATION

Or do they say, "He has invented it?" Say, "If I have invented it, you will not possess for me [the power of protection] from Allah at all. He is most knowing of that in which you are involved. Sufficient is He as Witness between me and you, and He is the Forgiving the Merciful

|||
8

قُلۡ مَا كُنتُ بِدۡعٗا مِّنَ ٱلرُّسُلِ وَمَآ أَدۡرِي مَا يُفۡعَلُ بِي وَلَا بِكُمۡۖ إِنۡ أَتَّبِعُ إِلَّا مَا يُوحَىٰٓ إِلَيَّ وَمَآ أَنَا۠ إِلَّا نَذِيرٞ مُّبِينٞ

Qul ma kuntu bidAAan mina alrrusuli wama adree ma yufAAalu bee wala bikum in attabiAAu illa ma yooha ilayya wama ana illa natheerun mubeenun

قُلۡqulSay
مَاNot
كُنتُkuntuI am
بِدۡعٗاbid'ʿana new (one)
مِّنَminaamong
ٱلرُّسُلِl-rusulithe Messengers
وَمَآwamāand not
أَدۡرِيadrīI know
مَاwhat
يُفۡعَلُyuf'ʿaluwill be done
بِيwith me
وَلَاwalāand not
بِكُمۡۖbikumwith you
إِنۡinNot
أَتَّبِعُattabiʿuI follow
إِلَّاillābut
مَاwhat
يُوحَىٰٓyūḥāis revealed
إِلَيَّilayyato me
وَمَآwamāand not
أَنَا۠anāI am
إِلَّاillābut
نَذِيرٞnadhīruna warner
مُّبِينٞmubīnunclear
TRANSLATION

Say, "I am not something original among the messengers, nor do I know what will be done with me or with you. I only follow that which is revealed to me, and I am not but a clear warner

|||
9

قُلۡ أَرَءَيۡتُمۡ إِن كَانَ مِنۡ عِندِ ٱللَّهِ وَكَفَرۡتُم بِهِۦ وَشَهِدَ شَاهِدٞ مِّنۢ بَنِيٓ إِسۡرَـٰٓءِيلَ عَلَىٰ مِثۡلِهِۦ فَـَٔامَنَ وَٱسۡتَكۡبَرۡتُمۡۚ إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ لَا يَهۡدِي ٱلۡقَوۡمَ ٱلظَّـٰلِمِينَ

Qul araaytum in kana min AAindi Allahi wakafartum bihi washahida shahidun min banee israeela AAala mithlihi faamana waistakbartum inna Allaha la yahdee alqawma alththalimeena

قُلۡqulSay
أَرَءَيۡتُمۡara-aytumDo you see
إِنinif
كَانَkānait is
مِنۡminfrom Allah
عِندِʿindifrom Allah
ٱللَّهِl-lahifrom Allah
وَكَفَرۡتُمwakafartumand you disbelieve
بِهِۦbihiin it
وَشَهِدَwashahidaand testifies
شَاهِدٞshāhiduna witness
مِّنۢminfrom
بَنِيٓbanī(the) Children of Israel
إِسۡرَـٰٓءِيلَis'rāīla(the) Children of Israel
عَلَىٰʿalāto
مِثۡلِهِۦmith'lihi(the) like thereof
فَـَٔامَنَfaāmanathen he believed
وَٱسۡتَكۡبَرۡتُمۡۚwa-is'takbartumwhile you are arrogant
إِنَّinnaIndeed
ٱللَّهَl-lahaAllah
لَا(does) not
يَهۡدِيyahdīguide
ٱلۡقَوۡمَl-qawmathe people
ٱلظَّـٰلِمِينَl-ẓālimīnathe wrongdoers
TRANSLATION

Say, "Have you considered: if the Qur'an was from Allah, and you disbelieved in it while a witness from the Children of Israel has testified to something similar and believed while you were arrogant...?" Indeed, Allah does not guide the wrongdoing people

|||
10

وَقَالَ ٱلَّذِينَ كَفَرُواْ لِلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُواْ لَوۡ كَانَ خَيۡرٗا مَّا سَبَقُونَآ إِلَيۡهِۚ وَإِذۡ لَمۡ يَهۡتَدُواْ بِهِۦ فَسَيَقُولُونَ هَٰذَآ إِفۡكٞ قَدِيمٞ

Waqala allatheena kafaroo lillatheena amanoo law kana khayran ma sabaqoona ilayhi waith lam yahtadoo bihi fasayaqooloona hatha ifkun qadeemun

وَقَالَwaqālaAnd say
ٱلَّذِينَalladhīnathose who
كَفَرُواْkafarūdisbelieve
لِلَّذِينَlilladhīnaof those who
ءَامَنُواْāmanūbelieve
لَوۡlawIf
كَانَkānait had been
خَيۡرٗاkhayrangood
مَّاnot
سَبَقُونَآsabaqūnāthey (would) have preceded us
إِلَيۡهِۚilayhito it
وَإِذۡwa-idhAnd when
لَمۡlamnot
يَهۡتَدُواْyahtadūthey (are) guided
بِهِۦbihiby it
فَسَيَقُولُونَfasayaqūlūnathey say
هَٰذَآhādhāThis
إِفۡكٞif'kun(is) a lie
قَدِيمٞqadīmunancient
TRANSLATION

And those who disbelieve say of those who believe, "If it had [truly] been good, they would not have preceded us to it." And when they are not guided by it, they will say, "This is an ancient falsehood

|||
11

وَمِن قَبۡلِهِۦ كِتَٰبُ مُوسَىٰٓ إِمَامٗا وَرَحۡمَةٗۚ وَهَٰذَا كِتَٰبٞ مُّصَدِّقٞ لِّسَانًا عَرَبِيّٗا لِّيُنذِرَ ٱلَّذِينَ ظَلَمُواْ وَبُشۡرَىٰ لِلۡمُحۡسِنِينَ

Wamin qablihi kitabu moosa imaman warahmatan wahatha kitabun musaddiqun lisanan AAarabiyyan liyunthira allatheena thalamoo wabushra lilmuhsineena

وَمِنwaminAnd before it
قَبۡلِهِۦqablihiAnd before it
كِتَٰبُkitābu(was the) Scripture
مُوسَىٰٓmūsā(of) Musa
إِمَامٗاimāman(as) a guide
وَرَحۡمَةٗۚwaraḥmatanand a mercy
وَهَٰذَاwahādhāAnd this
كِتَٰبٞkitābun(is) a Book
مُّصَدِّقٞmuṣaddiqunconfirming
لِّسَانًاlisānan(in) language
عَرَبِيّٗاʿarabiyyanArabic
لِّيُنذِرَliyundhirato warn
ٱلَّذِينَalladhīnathose who
ظَلَمُواْẓalamūdo wrong
وَبُشۡرَىٰwabush'rāand (as) glad tidings
لِلۡمُحۡسِنِينَlil'muḥ'sinīnafor the good-doers
TRANSLATION

And before it was the scripture of Moses to lead and as a mercy. And this is a confirming Book in an Arabic tongue to warn those who have wronged and as good tidings to the doers of good

|||
12

إِنَّ ٱلَّذِينَ قَالُواْ رَبُّنَا ٱللَّهُ ثُمَّ ٱسۡتَقَٰمُواْ فَلَا خَوۡفٌ عَلَيۡهِمۡ وَلَا هُمۡ يَحۡزَنُونَ

Inna allatheena qaloo rabbuna Allahu thumma istaqamoo fala khawfun AAalayhim wala hum yahzanoona

WORD BY WORD
إِنَّinnaIndeed
ٱلَّذِينَalladhīnathose who
قَالُواْqālūsay
رَبُّنَاrabbunāOur Lord
ٱللَّهُl-lahu(is) Allah
ثُمَّthummathen
ٱسۡتَقَٰمُواْis'taqāmūremain firm
فَلَاfalāthen no
خَوۡفٌkhawfunfear
عَلَيۡهِمۡʿalayhimon them
وَلَاwalāand not
هُمۡhumthey
يَحۡزَنُونَyaḥzanūnawill grieve
TRANSLATION

Indeed, those who have said, "Our Lord is Allah," and then remained on a right course - there will be no fear concerning them, nor will they grieve

|||
13

أُوْلَـٰٓئِكَ أَصۡحَٰبُ ٱلۡجَنَّةِ خَٰلِدِينَ فِيهَا جَزَآءَۢ بِمَا كَانُواْ يَعۡمَلُونَ

Olaika ashabu aljannati khalideena feeha jazaan bima kanoo yaAAmaloona

WORD BY WORD
أُوْلَـٰٓئِكَulāikaThose
أَصۡحَٰبُaṣḥābu(are the) companions
ٱلۡجَنَّةِl-janati(of) Paradise
خَٰلِدِينَkhālidīnaabiding forever
فِيهَاfīhātherein
جَزَآءَۢjazāana reward
بِمَاbimāfor what
كَانُواْkānūthey used to
يَعۡمَلُونَyaʿmalūnado
TRANSLATION

Those are the companions of Paradise, abiding eternally therein as reward for what they used to do

|||
14

وَوَصَّيۡنَا ٱلۡإِنسَٰنَ بِوَٰلِدَيۡهِ إِحۡسَٰنًاۖ حَمَلَتۡهُ أُمُّهُۥ كُرۡهٗا وَوَضَعَتۡهُ كُرۡهٗاۖ وَحَمۡلُهُۥ وَفِصَٰلُهُۥ ثَلَٰثُونَ شَهۡرًاۚ حَتَّىٰٓ إِذَا بَلَغَ أَشُدَّهُۥ وَبَلَغَ أَرۡبَعِينَ سَنَةٗ قَالَ رَبِّ أَوۡزِعۡنِيٓ أَنۡ أَشۡكُرَ نِعۡمَتَكَ ٱلَّتِيٓ أَنۡعَمۡتَ عَلَيَّ وَعَلَىٰ وَٰلِدَيَّ وَأَنۡ أَعۡمَلَ صَٰلِحٗا تَرۡضَىٰهُ وَأَصۡلِحۡ لِي فِي ذُرِّيَّتِيٓۖ إِنِّي تُبۡتُ إِلَيۡكَ وَإِنِّي مِنَ ٱلۡمُسۡلِمِينَ

Wawassayna alinsana biwalidayhi ihsanan hamalathu ommuhu kurhan wawadaAAathu kurhan wahamluhu wafisaluhu thalathoona shahran hatta itha balagha ashuddahu wabalagha arbaAAeena sanatan qala rabbi awziAAnee an ashkura niAAmataka allatee anAAamta AAalayya waAAala walidayya waan aAAmala salihan tardahu waaslih lee fee thurriyyatee innee tubtu ilayka wainnee mina almuslimeena

WORD BY WORD
وَوَصَّيۡنَاwawaṣṣaynāAnd We have enjoined
ٱلۡإِنسَٰنَl-insāna(on) man
بِوَٰلِدَيۡهِbiwālidayhito his parents
إِحۡسَٰنًاۖiḥ'sānankindness
حَمَلَتۡهُḥamalathuCarried him
أُمُّهُۥummuhuhis mother
كُرۡهٗاkur'han(with) hardship
وَوَضَعَتۡهُwawaḍaʿathuand gave birth to him
كُرۡهٗاۖkur'han(with) hardship
وَحَمۡلُهُۥwaḥamluhuAnd (the) bearing of him
وَفِصَٰلُهُۥwafiṣāluhuand (the) weaning of him
ثَلَٰثُونَthalāthūna(is) thirty
شَهۡرًاۚshahranmonth(s)
حَتَّىٰٓḥattāuntil
إِذَاidhāwhen
بَلَغَbalaghahe reaches
أَشُدَّهُۥashuddahuhis maturity
وَبَلَغَwabalaghaand reaches
أَرۡبَعِينَarbaʿīnaforty
سَنَةٗsanatanyear(s)
قَالَqālahe says
رَبِّrabbiMy Lord
أَوۡزِعۡنِيٓawziʿ'nīgrant me (the) power
أَنۡanthat
أَشۡكُرَashkuraI may be grateful
نِعۡمَتَكَniʿ'mataka(for) Your favor
ٱلَّتِيٓallatīwhich
أَنۡعَمۡتَanʿamtaYou have bestowed
عَلَيَّʿalayyaupon me
وَعَلَىٰwaʿalāand upon
وَٰلِدَيَّwālidayyamy parents
وَأَنۡwa-anand that
أَعۡمَلَaʿmalaI do
صَٰلِحٗاṣāliḥanrighteous (deeds)
تَرۡضَىٰهُtarḍāhuwhich please You
وَأَصۡلِحۡwa-aṣliḥand make righteous
لِيfor me
فِيamong
ذُرِّيَّتِيٓۖdhurriyyatīmy offspring
إِنِّيinnīindeed
تُبۡتُtub'tuI turn
إِلَيۡكَilaykato You
وَإِنِّيwa-innīand indeed, I am
مِنَminaof
ٱلۡمُسۡلِمِينَl-mus'limīnathose who submit
TRANSLATION

And We have enjoined upon man, to his parents, good treatment. His mother carried him with hardship and gave birth to him with hardship, and his gestation and weaning [period] is thirty months. [He grows] until, when he reaches maturity and reaches [the age of] forty years, he says, "My Lord, enable me to be grateful for Your favor which You have bestowed upon me and upon my parents and to work righteousness of which You will approve and make righteous for me my offspring. Indeed, I have repented to You, and indeed, I am of the Muslims

|||
15

أُوْلَـٰٓئِكَ ٱلَّذِينَ نَتَقَبَّلُ عَنۡهُمۡ أَحۡسَنَ مَا عَمِلُواْ وَنَتَجَاوَزُ عَن سَيِّـَٔاتِهِمۡ فِيٓ أَصۡحَٰبِ ٱلۡجَنَّةِۖ وَعۡدَ ٱلصِّدۡقِ ٱلَّذِي كَانُواْ يُوعَدُونَ

Olaika allatheena nataqabbalu AAanhum ahsana ma AAamiloo wanatajawazu AAan sayyiatihim fee ashabi aljannati waAAda alssidqi allathee kanoo yooAAadoona

WORD BY WORD
أُوْلَـٰٓئِكَulāikaThose
ٱلَّذِينَalladhīna(are) the ones
نَتَقَبَّلُnataqabbaluWe will accept
عَنۡهُمۡʿanhumfrom them
أَحۡسَنَaḥsana(the) best
مَا(of) what
عَمِلُواْʿamilūthey did
وَنَتَجَاوَزُwanatajāwazuand We will overlook
عَنʿan[from]
سَيِّـَٔاتِهِمۡsayyiātihimtheir evil deeds
فِيٓamong
أَصۡحَٰبِaṣḥābi(the) companions
ٱلۡجَنَّةِۖl-janati(of) Paradise
وَعۡدَwaʿdaA promise
ٱلصِّدۡقِl-ṣid'qitrue
ٱلَّذِيalladhīwhich
كَانُواْkānūthey were
يُوعَدُونَyūʿadūnapromised
TRANSLATION

Those are the ones from whom We will accept the best of what they did and overlook their misdeeds, [their being] among the companions of Paradise. [That is] the promise of truth which they had been promised

|||
16

وَٱلَّذِي قَالَ لِوَٰلِدَيۡهِ أُفّٖ لَّكُمَآ أَتَعِدَانِنِيٓ أَنۡ أُخۡرَجَ وَقَدۡ خَلَتِ ٱلۡقُرُونُ مِن قَبۡلِي وَهُمَا يَسۡتَغِيثَانِ ٱللَّهَ وَيۡلَكَ ءَامِنۡ إِنَّ وَعۡدَ ٱللَّهِ حَقّٞ فَيَقُولُ مَا هَٰذَآ إِلَّآ أَسَٰطِيرُ ٱلۡأَوَّلِينَ

Waallathee qala liwalidayhi offin lakuma ataAAidaninee an okhraja waqad khalati alquroonu min qablee wahuma yastagheethani Allaha waylaka amin inna waAAda Allahi haqqun fayaqoolu ma hatha illa asateeru alawwaleena

WORD BY WORD
وَٱلَّذِيwa-alladhīBut the one who
قَالَqālasays
لِوَٰلِدَيۡهِliwālidayhito his parents
أُفّٖuffinUff
لَّكُمَآlakumāto both of you
أَتَعِدَانِنِيٓataʿidāninīDo you promise me
أَنۡanthat
أُخۡرَجَukh'rajaI will be brought forth
وَقَدۡwaqadand have already passed away
خَلَتِkhalatiand have already passed away
ٱلۡقُرُونُl-qurūnuthe generations
مِنminbefore me
قَبۡلِيqablībefore me
وَهُمَاwahumāAnd they both
يَسۡتَغِيثَانِyastaghīthāniseek help
ٱللَّهَl-laha(of) Allah
وَيۡلَكَwaylakaWoe to you
ءَامِنۡāminBelieve
إِنَّinnaIndeed
وَعۡدَwaʿda(the) Promise
ٱللَّهِl-lahi(of) Allah
حَقّٞḥaqqun(is) true
فَيَقُولُfayaqūluBut he says
مَاNot
هَٰذَآhādhā(is) this
إِلَّآillābut
أَسَٰطِيرُasāṭīru(the) stories
ٱلۡأَوَّلِينَl-awalīna(of) the former (people)
TRANSLATION

But one who says to his parents, "Uff to you; do you promise me that I will be brought forth [from the earth] when generations before me have already passed on [into oblivion]?" while they call to Allah for help [and to their son], "Woe to you! Believe! Indeed, the promise of Allah is truth." But he says, "This is not but legends of the former people

17

أُوْلَـٰٓئِكَ ٱلَّذِينَ حَقَّ عَلَيۡهِمُ ٱلۡقَوۡلُ فِيٓ أُمَمٖ قَدۡ خَلَتۡ مِن قَبۡلِهِم مِّنَ ٱلۡجِنِّ وَٱلۡإِنسِۖ إِنَّهُمۡ كَانُواْ خَٰسِرِينَ

Olaika allatheena haqqa AAalayhimu alqawlu fee umamin qad khalat min qablihim mina aljinni waalinsi innahum kanoo khasireena

WORD BY WORD
أُوْلَـٰٓئِكَulāikaThose
ٱلَّذِينَalladhīna(are) the ones
حَقَّḥaqqa(has) proved true
عَلَيۡهِمُʿalayhimuagainst them
ٱلۡقَوۡلُl-qawluthe word
فِيٓamong
أُمَمٖumaminnations
قَدۡqad(that) already passed away
خَلَتۡkhalat(that) already passed away
مِنminbefore them
قَبۡلِهِمqablihimbefore them
مِّنَminaof
ٱلۡجِنِّl-jini(the) jinn
وَٱلۡإِنسِۖwal-insiand the men
إِنَّهُمۡinnahumIndeed, they
كَانُواْkānūare
خَٰسِرِينَkhāsirīna(the) losers
TRANSLATION

Those are the ones upon whom the word has come into effect, [who will be] among nations which had passed on before them of jinn and men. Indeed, they [all] were losers

18

وَلِكُلّٖ دَرَجَٰتٞ مِّمَّا عَمِلُواْۖ وَلِيُوَفِّيَهُمۡ أَعۡمَٰلَهُمۡ وَهُمۡ لَا يُظۡلَمُونَ

Walikullin darajatun mimma AAamiloo waliyuwaffiyahum aAAmalahum wahum la yuthlamoona

WORD BY WORD
وَلِكُلّٖwalikullinAnd for all
دَرَجَٰتٞdarajātun(are) degrees
مِّمَّاmimmāfor what
عَمِلُواْۖʿamilūthey did
وَلِيُوَفِّيَهُمۡwaliyuwaffiyahumand that He may fully compensate them
أَعۡمَٰلَهُمۡaʿmālahum(for) their deeds
وَهُمۡwahumand they
لَاwill not be wronged
يُظۡلَمُونَyuẓ'lamūnawill not be wronged
TRANSLATION

And for all there are degrees [of reward and punishment] for what they have done, and [it is] so that He may fully compensate them for their deeds, and they will not be wronged

|||
19

وَيَوۡمَ يُعۡرَضُ ٱلَّذِينَ كَفَرُواْ عَلَى ٱلنَّارِ أَذۡهَبۡتُمۡ طَيِّبَٰتِكُمۡ فِي حَيَاتِكُمُ ٱلدُّنۡيَا وَٱسۡتَمۡتَعۡتُم بِهَا فَٱلۡيَوۡمَ تُجۡزَوۡنَ عَذَابَ ٱلۡهُونِ بِمَا كُنتُمۡ تَسۡتَكۡبِرُونَ فِي ٱلۡأَرۡضِ بِغَيۡرِ ٱلۡحَقِّ وَبِمَا كُنتُمۡ تَفۡسُقُونَ

Wayawma yuAAradu allatheena kafaroo AAala alnnari athhabtum tayyibatikum fee hayatikumu alddunya waistamtaAAtum biha faalyawma tujzawna AAathaba alhooni bima kuntum tastakbiroona fee alardi bighayri alhaqqi wabima kuntum tafsuqoona

WORD BY WORD
وَيَوۡمَwayawmaAnd (the) Day
يُعۡرَضُyuʿ'raḍuwill be exposed
ٱلَّذِينَalladhīnathose who
كَفَرُواْkafarūdisbelieved
عَلَىʿalāto
ٱلنَّارِl-nārithe Fire
أَذۡهَبۡتُمۡadhhabtumYou exhausted
طَيِّبَٰتِكُمۡṭayyibātikumyour good things
فِيin
حَيَاتِكُمُḥayātikumuyour life
ٱلدُّنۡيَاl-dun'yā(of) the world
وَٱسۡتَمۡتَعۡتُمwa-is'tamtaʿtumand you took your pleasures
بِهَاbihātherein
فَٱلۡيَوۡمَfal-yawmaSo today
تُجۡزَوۡنَtuj'zawnayou will be recompensed
عَذَابَʿadhāba(with) a punishment
ٱلۡهُونِl-hūnihumiliating
بِمَاbimābecause
كُنتُمۡkuntumyou were
تَسۡتَكۡبِرُونَtastakbirūnaarrogant
فِيin
ٱلۡأَرۡضِl-arḍithe earth
بِغَيۡرِbighayriwithout
ٱلۡحَقِّl-ḥaqi[the] right
وَبِمَاwabimāand because
كُنتُمۡkuntumyou were
تَفۡسُقُونَtafsuqūnadefiantly disobedient
TRANSLATION

And the Day those who disbelieved are exposed to the Fire [it will be said], "You exhausted your pleasures during your worldly life and enjoyed them, so this Day you will be awarded the punishment of [extreme] humiliation because you were arrogant upon the earth without right and because you were defiantly disobedient
