ٱلَّذِينَ كَفَرُواْ وَصَدُّواْ عَن سَبِيلِ ٱللَّهِ أَضَلَّ أَعۡمَٰلَهُمۡ

Allatheena kafaroo wasaddoo AAan sabeeli Allahi adalla aAAmalahum

WORD BY WORD
ٱلَّذِينَalladhīnaThose who
كَفَرُواْkafarūdisbelieve
وَصَدُّواْwaṣaddūand turn away
عَنʿanfrom
سَبِيلِsabīli(the) way of Allah
ٱللَّهِl-lahi(the) way of Allah
أَضَلَّaḍallaHe will cause to be lost
أَعۡمَٰلَهُمۡaʿmālahumtheir deeds
TRANSLATION

Those who disbelieve and avert [people] from the way of Allah - He will waste their deeds

|||
1

وَٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُواْ وَعَمِلُواْ ٱلصَّـٰلِحَٰتِ وَءَامَنُواْ بِمَا نُزِّلَ عَلَىٰ مُحَمَّدٖ وَهُوَ ٱلۡحَقُّ مِن رَّبِّهِمۡ كَفَّرَ عَنۡهُمۡ سَيِّـَٔاتِهِمۡ وَأَصۡلَحَ بَالَهُمۡ

Waallatheena amanoo waAAamiloo alssalihati waamanoo bima nuzzila AAala muhammadin wahuwa alhaqqu min rabbihim kaffara AAanhum sayyiatihim waaslaha balahum

WORD BY WORD
وَٱلَّذِينَwa-alladhīnaAnd those who
ءَامَنُواْāmanūbelieve
وَعَمِلُواْwaʿamilūand do
ٱلصَّـٰلِحَٰتِl-ṣāliḥātirighteous deeds
وَءَامَنُواْwaāmanūand believe
بِمَاbimāin what
نُزِّلَnuzzilais revealed
عَلَىٰʿalāto
مُحَمَّدٖmuḥammadinMuhammad
وَهُوَwahuwaand it
ٱلۡحَقُّl-ḥaqu(is) the truth
مِنminfrom
رَّبِّهِمۡrabbihimtheir Lord
كَفَّرَkaffaraHe will remove
عَنۡهُمۡʿanhumfrom them
سَيِّـَٔاتِهِمۡsayyiātihimtheir misdeeds
وَأَصۡلَحَwa-aṣlaḥaand improve
بَالَهُمۡbālahumtheir condition
TRANSLATION

And those who believe and do righteous deeds and believe in what has been sent down upon Muhammad - and it is the truth from their Lord - He will remove from them their misdeeds and amend their condition

|||
2

ذَٰلِكَ بِأَنَّ ٱلَّذِينَ كَفَرُواْ ٱتَّبَعُواْ ٱلۡبَٰطِلَ وَأَنَّ ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُواْ ٱتَّبَعُواْ ٱلۡحَقَّ مِن رَّبِّهِمۡۚ كَذَٰلِكَ يَضۡرِبُ ٱللَّهُ لِلنَّاسِ أَمۡثَٰلَهُمۡ

Thalika bianna allatheena kafaroo ittabaAAoo albatila waanna allatheena amanoo ittabaAAoo alhaqqa min rabbihim kathalika yadribu Allahu lilnnasi amthalahum

WORD BY WORD
ذَٰلِكَdhālikaThat
بِأَنَّbi-anna(is) because
ٱلَّذِينَalladhīnathose who
كَفَرُواْkafarūdisbelieve
ٱتَّبَعُواْittabaʿūfollow
ٱلۡبَٰطِلَl-bāṭilafalsehood
وَأَنَّwa-annaand that
ٱلَّذِينَalladhīnathose who
ءَامَنُواْāmanūbelieve
ٱتَّبَعُواْittabaʿūfollow
ٱلۡحَقَّl-ḥaqa(the) truth
مِنminfrom
رَّبِّهِمۡۚrabbihimtheir Lord
كَذَٰلِكَkadhālikaThus
يَضۡرِبُyaḍribuAllah presents
ٱللَّهُl-lahuAllah presents
لِلنَّاسِlilnnāsito the people
أَمۡثَٰلَهُمۡamthālahumtheir similitudes
TRANSLATION

That is because those who disbelieve follow falsehood, and those who believe follow the truth from their Lord. Thus does Allah present to the people their comparisons

|||
3

فَإِذَا لَقِيتُمُ ٱلَّذِينَ كَفَرُواْ فَضَرۡبَ ٱلرِّقَابِ حَتَّىٰٓ إِذَآ أَثۡخَنتُمُوهُمۡ فَشُدُّواْ ٱلۡوَثَاقَ فَإِمَّا مَنَّۢا بَعۡدُ وَإِمَّا فِدَآءً حَتَّىٰ تَضَعَ ٱلۡحَرۡبُ أَوۡزَارَهَاۚ ذَٰلِكَۖ وَلَوۡ يَشَآءُ ٱللَّهُ لَٱنتَصَرَ مِنۡهُمۡ وَلَٰكِن لِّيَبۡلُوَاْ بَعۡضَكُم بِبَعۡضٖۗ وَٱلَّذِينَ قُتِلُواْ فِي سَبِيلِ ٱللَّهِ فَلَن يُضِلَّ أَعۡمَٰلَهُمۡ

Faitha laqeetumu allatheena kafaroo fadarba alrriqabi hatta itha athkhantumoohum fashuddoo alwathaqa faimma mannan baAAdu waimma fidaan hatta tadaAAa alharbu awzaraha thalika walaw yashao Allahu laintasara minhum walakin liyabluwa baAAdakum bibaAAdin waallatheena qutiloo fee sabeeli Allahi falan yudilla aAAmalahum

WORD BY WORD
فَإِذَاfa-idhāSo when
لَقِيتُمُlaqītumuyou meet
ٱلَّذِينَalladhīnathose who
كَفَرُواْkafarūdisbelieve
فَضَرۡبَfaḍarbathen strike
ٱلرِّقَابِl-riqābithe necks
حَتَّىٰٓḥattāuntil
إِذَآidhāwhen
أَثۡخَنتُمُوهُمۡathkhantumūhumyou have subdued them
فَشُدُّواْfashuddūthen bind firmly
ٱلۡوَثَاقَl-wathāqathe bond
فَإِمَّاfa-immāthen either
مَنَّۢاmannana favor
بَعۡدُbaʿduafterwards
وَإِمَّاwa-immāor
فِدَآءًfidāanransom
حَتَّىٰḥattāuntil
تَضَعَtaḍaʿalays down
ٱلۡحَرۡبُl-ḥarbuthe war
أَوۡزَارَهَاۚawzārahāits burdens
ذَٰلِكَۖdhālikaThat
وَلَوۡwalawAnd if
يَشَآءُyashāuAllah had willed
ٱللَّهُl-lahuAllah had willed
لَٱنتَصَرَla-intaṣarasurely, He could have taken retribution
مِنۡهُمۡmin'humfrom them
وَلَٰكِنwalākinbut
لِّيَبۡلُوَاْliyabluwāto test
بَعۡضَكُمbaʿḍakumsome of you
بِبَعۡضٖۗbibaʿḍinwith others
وَٱلَّذِينَwa-alladhīnaAnd those who
قُتِلُواْqutilūare killed
فِيin
سَبِيلِsabīli(the) way of Allah
ٱللَّهِl-lahi(the) way of Allah
فَلَنfalanthen never
يُضِلَّyuḍillaHe will cause to be lost
أَعۡمَٰلَهُمۡaʿmālahumtheir deeds
TRANSLATION

So when you meet those who disbelieve [in battle], strike [their] necks until, when you have inflicted slaughter upon them, then secure their bonds, and either [confer] favor afterwards or ransom [them] until the war lays down its burdens. That [is the command]. And if Allah had willed, He could have taken vengeance upon them [Himself], but [He ordered armed struggle] to test some of you by means of others. And those who are killed in the cause of Allah - never will He waste their deeds

|||
4

سَيَهۡدِيهِمۡ وَيُصۡلِحُ بَالَهُمۡ

Sayahdeehim wayuslihu balahum

WORD BY WORD
سَيَهۡدِيهِمۡsayahdīhimHe will guide them
وَيُصۡلِحُwayuṣ'liḥuand improve
بَالَهُمۡbālahumtheir condition
TRANSLATION

He will guide them and amend their condition

|||
5

وَيُدۡخِلُهُمُ ٱلۡجَنَّةَ عَرَّفَهَا لَهُمۡ

Wayudkhiluhumu aljannata AAarrafaha lahum

WORD BY WORD
وَيُدۡخِلُهُمُwayud'khiluhumuAnd admit them
ٱلۡجَنَّةَl-janata(to) Paradise
عَرَّفَهَاʿarrafahāHe has made it known
لَهُمۡlahumto them
TRANSLATION

And admit them to Paradise, which He has made known to them

|||
6

يَـٰٓأَيُّهَا ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوٓاْ إِن تَنصُرُواْ ٱللَّهَ يَنصُرۡكُمۡ وَيُثَبِّتۡ أَقۡدَامَكُمۡ

Ya ayyuha allatheena amanoo in tansuroo Allaha yansurkum wayuthabbit aqdamakum

WORD BY WORD
يَـٰٓأَيُّهَاyāayyuhāO you who believe
ٱلَّذِينَalladhīnaO you who believe
ءَامَنُوٓاْāmanūO you who believe
إِنinIf
تَنصُرُواْtanṣurūyou help
ٱللَّهَl-lahaAllah
يَنصُرۡكُمۡyanṣur'kumHe will help you
وَيُثَبِّتۡwayuthabbitand make firm
أَقۡدَامَكُمۡaqdāmakumyour feet
TRANSLATION

O you who have believed, if you support Allah, He will support you and plant firmly your feet

|||
7

وَٱلَّذِينَ كَفَرُواْ فَتَعۡسٗا لَّهُمۡ وَأَضَلَّ أَعۡمَٰلَهُمۡ

Waallatheena kafaroo fataAAsan lahum waadalla aAAmalahum

WORD BY WORD
وَٱلَّذِينَwa-alladhīnaBut those who
كَفَرُواْkafarūdisbelieve
فَتَعۡسٗاfataʿsandestruction (is)
لَّهُمۡlahumfor them
وَأَضَلَّwa-aḍallaand He will cause to be lost
أَعۡمَٰلَهُمۡaʿmālahumtheir deeds
TRANSLATION

But those who disbelieve - for them is misery, and He will waste their deeds

|||
8

ذَٰلِكَ بِأَنَّهُمۡ كَرِهُواْ مَآ أَنزَلَ ٱللَّهُ فَأَحۡبَطَ أَعۡمَٰلَهُمۡ

Thalika biannahum karihoo ma anzala Allahu faahbata aAAmalahum

WORD BY WORD
ذَٰلِكَdhālikaThat
بِأَنَّهُمۡbi-annahum(is) because they
كَرِهُواْkarihūhate
مَآwhat
أَنزَلَanzalaAllah has revealed
ٱللَّهُl-lahuAllah has revealed
فَأَحۡبَطَfa-aḥbaṭaso He has made worthless
أَعۡمَٰلَهُمۡaʿmālahumtheir deeds
TRANSLATION

That is because they disliked what Allah revealed, so He rendered worthless their deeds

|||
9

۞أَفَلَمۡ يَسِيرُواْ فِي ٱلۡأَرۡضِ فَيَنظُرُواْ كَيۡفَ كَانَ عَٰقِبَةُ ٱلَّذِينَ مِن قَبۡلِهِمۡۖ دَمَّرَ ٱللَّهُ عَلَيۡهِمۡۖ وَلِلۡكَٰفِرِينَ أَمۡثَٰلُهَا

Afalam yaseeroo fee alardi fayanthuroo kayfa kana AAaqibatu allatheena min qablihim dammara Allahu AAalayhim walilkafireena amthaluha

WORD BY WORD
۞أَفَلَمۡafalamDo not
يَسِيرُواْyasīrūthey travel
فِيin
ٱلۡأَرۡضِl-arḍithe earth
فَيَنظُرُواْfayanẓurūand see
كَيۡفَkayfahow
كَانَkānawas
عَٰقِبَةُʿāqibatu(the) end
ٱلَّذِينَalladhīna(of) those
مِنminbefore them
قَبۡلِهِمۡۖqablihimbefore them
دَمَّرَdammaraAllah destroyed
ٱللَّهُl-lahuAllah destroyed
عَلَيۡهِمۡۖʿalayhim[over] them
وَلِلۡكَٰفِرِينَwalil'kāfirīnaand for the disbelievers
أَمۡثَٰلُهَاamthāluhāits likeness
TRANSLATION

Have they not traveled through the land and seen how was the end of those before them? Allah destroyed [everything] over them, and for the disbelievers is something comparable

|||
10

ذَٰلِكَ بِأَنَّ ٱللَّهَ مَوۡلَى ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُواْ وَأَنَّ ٱلۡكَٰفِرِينَ لَا مَوۡلَىٰ لَهُمۡ

Thalika bianna Allaha mawla allatheena amanoo waanna alkafireena la mawla lahum

WORD BY WORD
ذَٰلِكَdhālikaThat
بِأَنَّbi-anna(is) because
ٱللَّهَl-lahaAllah
مَوۡلَىmawlā(is the) Protector
ٱلَّذِينَalladhīna(of) those who
ءَامَنُواْāmanūbelieve
وَأَنَّwa-annaand that
ٱلۡكَٰفِرِينَl-kāfirīnathe disbelievers
لَا(there is) no
مَوۡلَىٰmawlāprotector
لَهُمۡlahumfor them
TRANSLATION

That is because Allah is the protector of those who have believed and because the disbelievers have no protector

|||
11

إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ يُدۡخِلُ ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُواْ وَعَمِلُواْ ٱلصَّـٰلِحَٰتِ جَنَّـٰتٖ تَجۡرِي مِن تَحۡتِهَا ٱلۡأَنۡهَٰرُۖ وَٱلَّذِينَ كَفَرُواْ يَتَمَتَّعُونَ وَيَأۡكُلُونَ كَمَا تَأۡكُلُ ٱلۡأَنۡعَٰمُ وَٱلنَّارُ مَثۡوٗى لَّهُمۡ

Inna Allaha yudkhilu allatheena amanoo waAAamiloo alssalihati jannatin tajree min tahtiha alanharu waallatheena kafaroo yatamattaAAoona wayakuloona kama takulu alanAAamu waalnnaru mathwan lahum

WORD BY WORD
إِنَّinnaIndeed
ٱللَّهَl-lahaAllah
يُدۡخِلُyud'khiluwill admit
ٱلَّذِينَalladhīnathose who
ءَامَنُواْāmanūbelieve
وَعَمِلُواْwaʿamilūand do
ٱلصَّـٰلِحَٰتِl-ṣāliḥātirighteous deeds
جَنَّـٰتٖjannātin(to) Gardens
تَجۡرِيtajrīflow
مِنminfrom
تَحۡتِهَاtaḥtihāunderneath it
ٱلۡأَنۡهَٰرُۖl-anhāruthe rivers
وَٱلَّذِينَwa-alladhīnabut those who
كَفَرُواْkafarūdisbelieve
يَتَمَتَّعُونَyatamattaʿūnathey enjoy
وَيَأۡكُلُونَwayakulūnaand eat
كَمَاkamāas
تَأۡكُلُtakulueat
ٱلۡأَنۡعَٰمُl-anʿāmuthe cattle
وَٱلنَّارُwal-nāruand the Fire
مَثۡوٗىmathwan(will be) an abode
لَّهُمۡlahumfor them
TRANSLATION

Indeed, Allah will admit those who have believed and done righteous deeds to gardens beneath which rivers flow, but those who disbelieve enjoy themselves and eat as grazing livestock eat, and the Fire will be a residence for them

|||
12

وَكَأَيِّن مِّن قَرۡيَةٍ هِيَ أَشَدُّ قُوَّةٗ مِّن قَرۡيَتِكَ ٱلَّتِيٓ أَخۡرَجَتۡكَ أَهۡلَكۡنَٰهُمۡ فَلَا نَاصِرَ لَهُمۡ

Wakaayyin min qaryatin hiya ashaddu quwwatan min qaryatika allatee akhrajatka ahlaknahum fala nasira lahum

WORD BY WORD
وَكَأَيِّنwaka-ayyinAnd how many
مِّنminof
قَرۡيَةٍqaryatina town
هِيَhiyawhich
أَشَدُّashaddu(was) stronger
قُوَّةٗquwwatan(in) strength
مِّنminthan
قَرۡيَتِكَqaryatikayour town
ٱلَّتِيٓallatīwhich
أَخۡرَجَتۡكَakhrajatkahas driven you out
أَهۡلَكۡنَٰهُمۡahlaknāhumWe destroyed them
فَلَاfalāso no
نَاصِرَnāṣirahelper
لَهُمۡlahumfor them
TRANSLATION

And how many a city was stronger than your city [Makkah] which drove you out? We destroyed them; and there was no helper for them

|||
13

أَفَمَن كَانَ عَلَىٰ بَيِّنَةٖ مِّن رَّبِّهِۦ كَمَن زُيِّنَ لَهُۥ سُوٓءُ عَمَلِهِۦ وَٱتَّبَعُوٓاْ أَهۡوَآءَهُم

Afaman kana AAala bayyinatin min rabbihi kaman zuyyina lahu sooo AAamalihi waittabaAAoo ahwaahum

WORD BY WORD
أَفَمَنafamanThen is (he) who
كَانَkānais
عَلَىٰʿalāon
بَيِّنَةٖbayyinatina clear proof
مِّنminfrom
رَّبِّهِۦrabbihihis Lord
كَمَنkamanlike (he) who
زُيِّنَzuyyinais made attractive
لَهُۥlahuto him
سُوٓءُsūu(the) evil
عَمَلِهِۦʿamalihi(of) his deeds
وَٱتَّبَعُوٓاْwa-ittabaʿūwhile they follow
أَهۡوَآءَهُمahwāahumtheir desires
TRANSLATION

So is he who is on clear evidence from his Lord like him to whom the evil of his work has been made attractive and they follow their [own] desires

|||
14

مَّثَلُ ٱلۡجَنَّةِ ٱلَّتِي وُعِدَ ٱلۡمُتَّقُونَۖ فِيهَآ أَنۡهَٰرٞ مِّن مَّآءٍ غَيۡرِ ءَاسِنٖ وَأَنۡهَٰرٞ مِّن لَّبَنٖ لَّمۡ يَتَغَيَّرۡ طَعۡمُهُۥ وَأَنۡهَٰرٞ مِّنۡ خَمۡرٖ لَّذَّةٖ لِّلشَّـٰرِبِينَ وَأَنۡهَٰرٞ مِّنۡ عَسَلٖ مُّصَفّٗىۖ وَلَهُمۡ فِيهَا مِن كُلِّ ٱلثَّمَرَٰتِ وَمَغۡفِرَةٞ مِّن رَّبِّهِمۡۖ كَمَنۡ هُوَ خَٰلِدٞ فِي ٱلنَّارِ وَسُقُواْ مَآءً حَمِيمٗا فَقَطَّعَ أَمۡعَآءَهُمۡ

Mathalu aljannati allatee wuAAida almuttaqoona feeha anharun min main ghayri asinin waanharun min labanin lam yataghayyar taAAmuhu waanharun min khamrin laththatin lilshsharibeena waanharun min AAasalin musaffan walahum feeha min kulli alththamarati wamaghfiratun min rabbihim kaman huwa khalidun fee alnnari wasuqoo maan hameeman faqattaAAa amAAaahum

WORD BY WORD
مَّثَلُmathaluA parable
ٱلۡجَنَّةِl-janati(of) Paradise
ٱلَّتِيallatīwhich
وُعِدَwuʿidais promised
ٱلۡمُتَّقُونَۖl-mutaqūna(to) the righteous
فِيهَآfīhāTherein
أَنۡهَٰرٞanhārun(are) rivers
مِّنminof
مَّآءٍmāinwater
غَيۡرِghayrinot
ءَاسِنٖāsininpolluted
وَأَنۡهَٰرٞwa-anhārunand rivers
مِّنminof
لَّبَنٖlabaninmilk
لَّمۡlamnot
يَتَغَيَّرۡyataghayyarchanges
طَعۡمُهُۥṭaʿmuhuits taste
وَأَنۡهَٰرٞwa-anhārunand rivers
مِّنۡminof
خَمۡرٖkhamrinwine
لَّذَّةٖladhatindelicious
لِّلشَّـٰرِبِينَlilshāribīnafor (the) drinkers
وَأَنۡهَٰرٞwa-anhārunand rivers
مِّنۡminof
عَسَلٖʿasalinhoney
مُّصَفّٗىۖmuṣaffanpurified
وَلَهُمۡwalahumand for them
فِيهَاfīhātherein
مِنminof
كُلِّkulliall
ٱلثَّمَرَٰتِl-thamarātifruits
وَمَغۡفِرَةٞwamaghfiratunand forgiveness
مِّنminfrom
رَّبِّهِمۡۖrabbihimtheir Lord
كَمَنۡkamanlike he who
هُوَhuwalike he who
خَٰلِدٞkhālidun(will) abide forever
فِيin
ٱلنَّارِl-nārithe Fire
وَسُقُواْwasuqūand they will be given to drink
مَآءًmāanwater
حَمِيمٗاḥamīmanboiling
فَقَطَّعَfaqaṭṭaʿaso it cuts into pieces
أَمۡعَآءَهُمۡamʿāahumtheir intestines
TRANSLATION

Is the description of Paradise, which the righteous are promised, wherein are rivers of water unaltered, rivers of milk the taste of which never changes, rivers of wine delicious to those who drink, and rivers of purified honey, in which they will have from all [kinds of] fruits and forgiveness from their Lord, like [that of] those who abide eternally in the Fire and are given to drink scalding water that will sever their intestines

|||
15

وَمِنۡهُم مَّن يَسۡتَمِعُ إِلَيۡكَ حَتَّىٰٓ إِذَا خَرَجُواْ مِنۡ عِندِكَ قَالُواْ لِلَّذِينَ أُوتُواْ ٱلۡعِلۡمَ مَاذَا قَالَ ءَانِفًاۚ أُوْلَـٰٓئِكَ ٱلَّذِينَ طَبَعَ ٱللَّهُ عَلَىٰ قُلُوبِهِمۡ وَٱتَّبَعُوٓاْ أَهۡوَآءَهُمۡ

Waminhum man yastamiAAu ilayka hatta itha kharajoo min AAindika qaloo lillatheena ootoo alAAilma matha qala anifan olaika allatheena tabaAAa Allahu AAala quloobihim waittabaAAoo ahwaahum

WORD BY WORD
وَمِنۡهُمwamin'humAnd among them
مَّنman(are some) who
يَسۡتَمِعُyastamiʿulisten
إِلَيۡكَilaykato you
حَتَّىٰٓḥattāuntil
إِذَاidhāwhen
خَرَجُواْkharajūthey depart
مِنۡminfrom
عِندِكَʿindikayou
قَالُواْqālūthey say
لِلَّذِينَlilladhīnato those who
أُوتُواْūtūwere given
ٱلۡعِلۡمَl-ʿil'mathe knowledge
مَاذَاmādhāWhat
قَالَqāla(has) he said
ءَانِفًاۚānifanjust now
أُوْلَـٰٓئِكَulāikaThose
ٱلَّذِينَalladhīna(are) the ones
طَبَعَṭabaʿaAllah has set a seal
ٱللَّهُl-lahuAllah has set a seal
عَلَىٰʿalāupon
قُلُوبِهِمۡqulūbihimtheir hearts
وَٱتَّبَعُوٓاْwa-ittabaʿūand they follow
أَهۡوَآءَهُمۡahwāahumtheir desires
TRANSLATION

And among them, [O Muhammad], are those who listen to you, until when they depart from you, they say to those who were given knowledge, "What has he said just now?" Those are the ones of whom Allah has sealed over their hearts and who have followed their [own] desires

|||
16

وَٱلَّذِينَ ٱهۡتَدَوۡاْ زَادَهُمۡ هُدٗى وَءَاتَىٰهُمۡ تَقۡوَىٰهُمۡ

Waallatheena ihtadaw zadahum hudan waatahum taqwahum

WORD BY WORD
وَٱلَّذِينَwa-alladhīnaAnd those who
ٱهۡتَدَوۡاْih'tadawaccept guidance
زَادَهُمۡzādahumHe increases them
هُدٗىhudan(in) guidance
وَءَاتَىٰهُمۡwaātāhumand gives them
تَقۡوَىٰهُمۡtaqwāhumtheir righteousness
TRANSLATION

And those who are guided - He increases them in guidance and gives them their righteousness

|||
17

فَهَلۡ يَنظُرُونَ إِلَّا ٱلسَّاعَةَ أَن تَأۡتِيَهُم بَغۡتَةٗۖ فَقَدۡ جَآءَ أَشۡرَاطُهَاۚ فَأَنَّىٰ لَهُمۡ إِذَا جَآءَتۡهُمۡ ذِكۡرَىٰهُمۡ

Fahal yanthuroona illa alssaAAata an tatiyahum baghtatan faqad jaa ashratuha faanna lahum itha jaathum thikrahum

WORD BY WORD
فَهَلۡfahalThen do
يَنظُرُونَyanẓurūnathey wait
إِلَّاillābut
ٱلسَّاعَةَl-sāʿata(for) the Hour
أَنanthat
تَأۡتِيَهُمtatiyahumit should come to them
بَغۡتَةٗۖbaghtatansuddenly
فَقَدۡfaqadBut indeed
جَآءَjāahave come
أَشۡرَاطُهَاۚashrāṭuhāits indications
فَأَنَّىٰfa-annāThen how
لَهُمۡlahumto them
إِذَاidhāwhen
جَآءَتۡهُمۡjāathumhas come to them
ذِكۡرَىٰهُمۡdhik'rāhumtheir reminder
TRANSLATION

Then do they await except that the Hour should come upon them unexpectedly? But already there have come [some of] its indications. Then what good to them, when it has come, will be their remembrance

18

فَٱعۡلَمۡ أَنَّهُۥ لَآ إِلَٰهَ إِلَّا ٱللَّهُ وَٱسۡتَغۡفِرۡ لِذَنۢبِكَ وَلِلۡمُؤۡمِنِينَ وَٱلۡمُؤۡمِنَٰتِۗ وَٱللَّهُ يَعۡلَمُ مُتَقَلَّبَكُمۡ وَمَثۡوَىٰكُمۡ

FaiAAlam annahu la ilaha illa Allahu waistaghfir lithanbika walilmumineena waalmuminati waAllahu yaAAlamu mutaqallabakum wamathwakum

WORD BY WORD
فَٱعۡلَمۡfa-iʿ'lamSo know
أَنَّهُۥannahuthat [He]
لَآ(there is) no
إِلَٰهَilāhagod
إِلَّاillābut
ٱللَّهُl-lahuAllah
وَٱسۡتَغۡفِرۡwa-is'taghfirand ask forgiveness
لِذَنۢبِكَlidhanbikafor your sin
وَلِلۡمُؤۡمِنِينَwalil'mu'minīnaand for the believing men
وَٱلۡمُؤۡمِنَٰتِۗwal-mu'minātiand the believing women
وَٱللَّهُwal-lahuAnd Allah
يَعۡلَمُyaʿlamuknows
مُتَقَلَّبَكُمۡmutaqallabakumyour movement
وَمَثۡوَىٰكُمۡwamathwākumand your resting places
TRANSLATION

So know, [O Muhammad], that there is no deity except Allah and ask forgiveness for your sin and for the believing men and believing women. And Allah knows of your movement and your resting place

19

وَيَقُولُ ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُواْ لَوۡلَا نُزِّلَتۡ سُورَةٞۖ فَإِذَآ أُنزِلَتۡ سُورَةٞ مُّحۡكَمَةٞ وَذُكِرَ فِيهَا ٱلۡقِتَالُ رَأَيۡتَ ٱلَّذِينَ فِي قُلُوبِهِم مَّرَضٞ يَنظُرُونَ إِلَيۡكَ نَظَرَ ٱلۡمَغۡشِيِّ عَلَيۡهِ مِنَ ٱلۡمَوۡتِۖ فَأَوۡلَىٰ لَهُمۡ

Wayaqoolu allatheena amanoo lawla nuzzilat sooratun faitha onzilat sooratun muhkamatun wathukira feeha alqitalu raayta allatheena fee quloobihim maradun yanthuroona ilayka nathara almaghshiyyi AAalayhi mina almawti faawla lahum

WORD BY WORD
وَيَقُولُwayaqūluAnd say
ٱلَّذِينَalladhīnathose who
ءَامَنُواْāmanūbelieve
لَوۡلَاlawlāWhy not
نُزِّلَتۡnuzzilathas been revealed
سُورَةٞۖsūratuna Surah
فَإِذَآfa-idhāBut when
أُنزِلَتۡunzilatis revealed
سُورَةٞsūratuna Surah
مُّحۡكَمَةٞmuḥ'kamatunprecise
وَذُكِرَwadhukiraand is mentioned
فِيهَاfīhāin it
ٱلۡقِتَالُl-qitāluthe fighting
رَأَيۡتَra-aytayou see
ٱلَّذِينَalladhīnathose who
فِيin
قُلُوبِهِمqulūbihimtheir hearts
مَّرَضٞmaraḍun(is) a disease
يَنظُرُونَyanẓurūnalooking
إِلَيۡكَilaykaat you
نَظَرَnaẓaraa look
ٱلۡمَغۡشِيِّl-maghshiyi(of) one fainting
عَلَيۡهِʿalayhi(of) one fainting
مِنَminafrom
ٱلۡمَوۡتِۖl-mawtithe death
فَأَوۡلَىٰfa-awlāBut more appropriate
لَهُمۡlahumfor them
TRANSLATION

Those who believe say, "Why has a surah not been sent down? But when a precise surah is revealed and fighting is mentioned therein, you see those in whose hearts is hypocrisy looking at you with a look of one overcome by death. And more appropriate for them [would have been]
