53 : 1

وَٱلنَّجۡمِ إِذَا هَوَىٰ

Waalnnajmi itha hawa

وَٱلنَّجۡمِwal-najmiBy the star
إِذَاidhāwhen
هَوَىٰhawāit goes down
TRANSLATION

By the star when it descends

|||
53 : 2

مَا ضَلَّ صَاحِبُكُمۡ وَمَا غَوَىٰ

Ma dalla sahibukum wama ghawa

مَاmāNot
ضَلَّḍallahas strayed
صَاحِبُكُمۡṣāḥibukumyour companion
وَمَاwamāand not
غَوَىٰghawāhas he erred
TRANSLATION

Your companion [Muhammad] has not strayed, nor has he erred

|||
53 : 3

وَمَا يَنطِقُ عَنِ ٱلۡهَوَىٰٓ

Wama yantiqu AAani alhawa

وَمَاwamāAnd not
يَنطِقُyanṭiquhe speaks
عَنِʿanifrom
ٱلۡهَوَىٰٓl-hawāthe desire
TRANSLATION

Nor does he speak from [his own] inclination

|||
53 : 4

إِنۡ هُوَ إِلَّا وَحۡيٞ يُوحَىٰ

In huwa illa wahyun yooha

إِنۡinNot
هُوَhuwait
إِلَّاillā(is) except
وَحۡيٞwaḥyuna revelation
يُوحَىٰyūḥārevealed
TRANSLATION

It is not but a revelation revealed

|||
53 : 5

عَلَّمَهُۥ شَدِيدُ ٱلۡقُوَىٰ

AAallamahu shadeedu alquwa

عَلَّمَهُۥʿallamahuHas taught him
شَدِيدُshadīduthe (one) mighty
ٱلۡقُوَىٰl-quwā(in) power
TRANSLATION

Taught to him by one intense in strength

|||
53 : 6

ذُو مِرَّةٖ فَٱسۡتَوَىٰ

Thoo mirratin faistawa

ذُوdhūPossessor of soundness
مِرَّةٖmirratinPossessor of soundness
فَٱسۡتَوَىٰfa-is'tawāAnd he rose
TRANSLATION

One of soundness. And he rose to [his] true form

|||
53 : 7

وَهُوَ بِٱلۡأُفُقِ ٱلۡأَعۡلَىٰ

Wahuwa bialofuqi alaAAla

وَهُوَwahuwaWhile he
بِٱلۡأُفُقِbil-ufuqi(was) in the horizon
ٱلۡأَعۡلَىٰl-aʿlāthe highest
TRANSLATION

While he was in the higher [part of the] horizon

|||
53 : 8

ثُمَّ دَنَا فَتَدَلَّىٰ

Thumma dana fatadalla

ثُمَّthummaThen
دَنَاdanāhe approached
فَتَدَلَّىٰfatadallāand came down
TRANSLATION

Then he approached and descended

|||
53 : 9

فَكَانَ قَابَ قَوۡسَيۡنِ أَوۡ أَدۡنَىٰ

Fakana qaba qawsayni aw adna

فَكَانَfakānaAnd was
قَابَqāba(at) a distance
قَوۡسَيۡنِqawsayni(of) two bow-(lengths)
أَوۡawor
أَدۡنَىٰadnānearer
TRANSLATION

And was at a distance of two bow lengths or nearer

|||
53 : 10

فَأَوۡحَىٰٓ إِلَىٰ عَبۡدِهِۦ مَآ أَوۡحَىٰ

Faawha ila AAabdihi ma awha

فَأَوۡحَىٰٓfa-awḥāSo he revealed
إِلَىٰilāto
عَبۡدِهِۦʿabdihiHis slave
مَآmāwhat
أَوۡحَىٰawḥāhe revealed
TRANSLATION

And he revealed to His Servant what he revealed

|||
53 : 11

مَا كَذَبَ ٱلۡفُؤَادُ مَا رَأَىٰٓ

Ma kathaba alfuadu ma raa

مَاmāNot
كَذَبَkadhabalied
ٱلۡفُؤَادُl-fuāduthe heart
مَاmāwhat
رَأَىٰٓraāit saw
TRANSLATION

The heart did not lie [about] what it saw

|||
53 : 12

أَفَتُمَٰرُونَهُۥ عَلَىٰ مَا يَرَىٰ

Afatumaroonahu AAala ma yara

أَفَتُمَٰرُونَهُۥafatumārūnahuThen will you dispute with him
عَلَىٰʿalāabout
مَاmāwhat
يَرَىٰyarāhe saw
TRANSLATION

So will you dispute with him over what he saw

|||
53 : 13

وَلَقَدۡ رَءَاهُ نَزۡلَةً أُخۡرَىٰ

Walaqad raahu nazlatan okhra

وَلَقَدۡwalaqadAnd certainly
رَءَاهُraāhuhe saw him
نَزۡلَةًnazlatan(in) descent
أُخۡرَىٰukh'rāanother
TRANSLATION

And he certainly saw him in another descent

|||
53 : 14

عِندَ سِدۡرَةِ ٱلۡمُنتَهَىٰ

AAinda sidrati almuntaha

عِندَʿindaNear
سِدۡرَةِsid'rati(the) Lote Tree
ٱلۡمُنتَهَىٰl-muntahā(of) the utmost boundary
TRANSLATION

At the Lote Tree of the Utmost Boundary

|||
53 : 15

عِندَهَا جَنَّةُ ٱلۡمَأۡوَىٰٓ

AAindaha jannatu almawa

عِندَهَاʿindahāNear it
جَنَّةُjannatu(is the) Garden
ٱلۡمَأۡوَىٰٓl-mawā(of) Abode
TRANSLATION

Near it is the Garden of Refuge

|||
53 : 16

إِذۡ يَغۡشَى ٱلسِّدۡرَةَ مَا يَغۡشَىٰ

Ith yaghsha alssidrata ma yaghsha

إِذۡidhWhen
يَغۡشَىyaghshācovered
ٱلسِّدۡرَةَl-sid'ratathe Lote Tree
مَاmāwhat
يَغۡشَىٰyaghshācovers
TRANSLATION

When there covered the Lote Tree that which covered [it]

|||
53 : 17

مَا زَاغَ ٱلۡبَصَرُ وَمَا طَغَىٰ

Ma zagha albasaru wama tagha

مَاmāNot
زَاغَzāghaswerved
ٱلۡبَصَرُl-baṣaruthe sight
وَمَاwamāand not
طَغَىٰṭaghāit transgressed
TRANSLATION

The sight [of the Prophet] did not swerve, nor did it transgress [its limit]

|||
53 : 18

لَقَدۡ رَأَىٰ مِنۡ ءَايَٰتِ رَبِّهِ ٱلۡكُبۡرَىٰٓ

Laqad raa min ayati rabbihi alkubra

لَقَدۡlaqadCertainly
رَأَىٰraāhe saw
مِنۡminof
ءَايَٰتِāyāti(the) Signs
رَبِّهِrabbihi(of) his Lord
ٱلۡكُبۡرَىٰٓl-kub'rāthe Greatest
TRANSLATION

He certainly saw of the greatest signs of his Lord

|||
53 : 19

أَفَرَءَيۡتُمُ ٱللَّـٰتَ وَٱلۡعُزَّىٰ

Afaraaytumu allata waalAAuzza

أَفَرَءَيۡتُمُafara-aytumuSo have you seen
ٱللَّـٰتَl-lātathe Lat
وَٱلۡعُزَّىٰwal-ʿuzāand the Uzza
TRANSLATION

So have you considered al-Lat and al-'Uzza

|||
53 : 20

وَمَنَوٰةَ ٱلثَّالِثَةَ ٱلۡأُخۡرَىٰٓ

Wamanata alththalithata alokhra

وَمَنَوٰةَwamanataAnd Manat
ٱلثَّالِثَةَl-thālithatathe third
ٱلۡأُخۡرَىٰٓl-ukh'rāthe other
TRANSLATION

And Manat, the third - the other one

|||
