ٱقۡتَرَبَتِ ٱلسَّاعَةُ وَٱنشَقَّ ٱلۡقَمَرُ

Iqtarabati alssaAAatu wainshaqqa alqamaru

WORD BY WORD
ٱقۡتَرَبَتِiq'tarabatiHas come near
ٱلسَّاعَةُl-sāʿatuthe Hour
وَٱنشَقَّwa-inshaqqaand has split
ٱلۡقَمَرُl-qamaruthe moon
TRANSLATION

The Hour has come near, and the moon has split [in two]

|||
1

وَإِن يَرَوۡاْ ءَايَةٗ يُعۡرِضُواْ وَيَقُولُواْ سِحۡرٞ مُّسۡتَمِرّٞ

Wain yaraw ayatan yuAAridoo wayaqooloo sihrun mustamirrun

WORD BY WORD
وَإِنwa-inAnd if
يَرَوۡاْyarawthey see
ءَايَةٗāyatana Sign
يُعۡرِضُواْyuʿ'riḍūthey turn away
وَيَقُولُواْwayaqūlūand say
سِحۡرٞsiḥ'runMagic
مُّسۡتَمِرّٞmus'tamirruncontinuing
TRANSLATION

And if they see a miracle, they turn away and say, "Passing magic

|||
2

وَكَذَّبُواْ وَٱتَّبَعُوٓاْ أَهۡوَآءَهُمۡۚ وَكُلُّ أَمۡرٖ مُّسۡتَقِرّٞ

Wakaththaboo waittabaAAoo ahwaahum wakullu amrin mustaqirrun

WORD BY WORD
وَكَذَّبُواْwakadhabūAnd they denied
وَٱتَّبَعُوٓاْwa-ittabaʿūand followed
أَهۡوَآءَهُمۡۚahwāahumtheir desires
وَكُلُّwakullubut (for) every
أَمۡرٖamrinmatter
مُّسۡتَقِرّٞmus'taqirrun(will be a) settlement
TRANSLATION

And they denied and followed their inclinations. But for every matter is a [time of] settlement

|||
3

وَلَقَدۡ جَآءَهُم مِّنَ ٱلۡأَنۢبَآءِ مَا فِيهِ مُزۡدَجَرٌ

Walaqad jaahum mina alanbai ma feehi muzdajarun

WORD BY WORD
وَلَقَدۡwalaqadAnd certainly
جَآءَهُمjāahumhas come to them
مِّنَminaof
ٱلۡأَنۢبَآءِl-anbāithe information
مَاwherein
فِيهِfīhiwherein
مُزۡدَجَرٌmuz'dajarun(is) deterrence
TRANSLATION

And there has already come to them of information that in which there is deterrence

|||
4

حِكۡمَةُۢ بَٰلِغَةٞۖ فَمَا تُغۡنِ ٱلنُّذُرُ

Hikmatun balighatun fama tughnee alnnuthuru

WORD BY WORD
حِكۡمَةُۢḥik'matunWisdom
بَٰلِغَةٞۖbālighatunperfect
فَمَاfamābut not
تُغۡنِtugh'niwill avail
ٱلنُّذُرُl-nudhuruthe warnings
TRANSLATION

Extensive wisdom - but warning does not avail [them]

|||
5

فَتَوَلَّ عَنۡهُمۡۘ يَوۡمَ يَدۡعُ ٱلدَّاعِ إِلَىٰ شَيۡءٖ نُّكُرٍ

Fatawalla AAanhum yawma yadAAu alddaAAi ila shayin nukurin

WORD BY WORD
فَتَوَلَّfatawallaSo turn away
عَنۡهُمۡۘʿanhumfrom them
يَوۡمَyawma(The) Day
يَدۡعُyadʿuwill call
ٱلدَّاعِl-dāʿithe caller
إِلَىٰilāto
شَيۡءٖshayina thing
نُّكُرٍnukurinterrible
TRANSLATION

So leave them, [O Muhammad]. The Day the Caller calls to something forbidding

|||
6

خُشَّعًا أَبۡصَٰرُهُمۡ يَخۡرُجُونَ مِنَ ٱلۡأَجۡدَاثِ كَأَنَّهُمۡ جَرَادٞ مُّنتَشِرٞ

KhushshaAAan absaruhum yakhrujoona mina alajdathi kaannahum jaradun muntashirun

WORD BY WORD
خُشَّعًاkhushaʿan(Will be) humbled
أَبۡصَٰرُهُمۡabṣāruhumtheir eyes
يَخۡرُجُونَyakhrujūnathey will come forth
مِنَminafrom
ٱلۡأَجۡدَاثِl-ajdāthithe graves
كَأَنَّهُمۡka-annahumas if they (were)
جَرَادٞjarādunlocusts
مُّنتَشِرٞmuntashirunspreading
TRANSLATION

Their eyes humbled, they will emerge from the graves as if they were locusts spreading

|||
7

مُّهۡطِعِينَ إِلَى ٱلدَّاعِۖ يَقُولُ ٱلۡكَٰفِرُونَ هَٰذَا يَوۡمٌ عَسِرٞ

MuhtiAAeena ila alddaAAi yaqoolu alkafiroona hatha yawmun AAasirun

WORD BY WORD
مُّهۡطِعِينَmuh'ṭiʿīnaRacing ahead
إِلَىilātowards
ٱلدَّاعِۖl-dāʿithe caller
يَقُولُyaqūluWill say
ٱلۡكَٰفِرُونَl-kāfirūnathe disbelievers
هَٰذَاhādhāThis
يَوۡمٌyawmun(is) a Day
عَسِرٞʿasirundifficult
TRANSLATION

Racing ahead toward the Caller. The disbelievers will say, "This is a difficult Day

|||
8

۞كَذَّبَتۡ قَبۡلَهُمۡ قَوۡمُ نُوحٖ فَكَذَّبُواْ عَبۡدَنَا وَقَالُواْ مَجۡنُونٞ وَٱزۡدُجِرَ

Kaththabat qablahum qawmu noohin fakaththaboo AAabdana waqaloo majnoonun waizdujira

۞كَذَّبَتۡkadhabatDenied
قَبۡلَهُمۡqablahumbefore them
قَوۡمُqawmu(the) people
نُوحٖnūḥin(of) Nuh
فَكَذَّبُواْfakadhabūand they denied
عَبۡدَنَاʿabdanāOur slave
وَقَالُواْwaqālūand said
مَجۡنُونٞmajnūnunA madman
وَٱزۡدُجِرَwa-uz'dujiraand he was repelled
TRANSLATION

The people of Noah denied before them, and they denied Our servant and said, "A madman," and he was repelled

|||
9

فَدَعَا رَبَّهُۥٓ أَنِّي مَغۡلُوبٞ فَٱنتَصِرۡ

FadaAAa rabbahu annee maghloobun faintasir

WORD BY WORD
فَدَعَاfadaʿāSo he called
رَبَّهُۥٓrabbahuhis Lord
أَنِّيannīI am
مَغۡلُوبٞmaghlūbunone overpowered
فَٱنتَصِرۡfa-intaṣirso help
TRANSLATION

So he invoked his Lord, "Indeed, I am overpowered, so help

|||
10

فَفَتَحۡنَآ أَبۡوَٰبَ ٱلسَّمَآءِ بِمَآءٖ مُّنۡهَمِرٖ

Fafatahna abwaba alssamai bimain munhamirin

WORD BY WORD
فَفَتَحۡنَآfafataḥnāSo We opened
أَبۡوَٰبَabwāba(the) gates
ٱلسَّمَآءِl-samāi(of) heaven
بِمَآءٖbimāinwith water
مُّنۡهَمِرٖmun'hamirinpouring down
TRANSLATION

Then We opened the gates of the heaven with rain pouring down

|||
11

وَفَجَّرۡنَا ٱلۡأَرۡضَ عُيُونٗا فَٱلۡتَقَى ٱلۡمَآءُ عَلَىٰٓ أَمۡرٖ قَدۡ قُدِرَ

Wafajjarna alarda AAuyoonan failtaqa almao AAala amrin qad qudira

WORD BY WORD
وَفَجَّرۡنَاwafajjarnāAnd We caused to burst
ٱلۡأَرۡضَl-arḍathe earth
عُيُونٗاʿuyūnan(with) springs
فَٱلۡتَقَىfal-taqāso met
ٱلۡمَآءُl-māuthe water(s)
عَلَىٰٓʿalāfor
أَمۡرٖamrina matter
قَدۡqadalready
قُدِرَqudirapredestined
TRANSLATION

And caused the earth to burst with springs, and the waters met for a matter already predestined

|||
12

وَحَمَلۡنَٰهُ عَلَىٰ ذَاتِ أَلۡوَٰحٖ وَدُسُرٖ

Wahamalnahu AAala thati alwahin wadusurin

WORD BY WORD
وَحَمَلۡنَٰهُwaḥamalnāhuAnd We carried him
عَلَىٰʿalāon
ذَاتِdhāti(ark) made of planks
أَلۡوَٰحٖalwāḥin(ark) made of planks
وَدُسُرٖwadusurinand nails
TRANSLATION

And We carried him on a [construction of] planks and nails

|||
13

تَجۡرِي بِأَعۡيُنِنَا جَزَآءٗ لِّمَن كَانَ كُفِرَ

Tajree biaAAyunina jazaan liman kana kufira

WORD BY WORD
تَجۡرِيtajrīSailing
بِأَعۡيُنِنَاbi-aʿyuninābefore Our eyes
جَزَآءٗjazāana reward
لِّمَنlimanfor (he) who
كَانَkānawas
كُفِرَkufiradenied
TRANSLATION

Sailing under Our observation as reward for he who had been denied

|||
14

وَلَقَد تَّرَكۡنَٰهَآ ءَايَةٗ فَهَلۡ مِن مُّدَّكِرٖ

Walaqad taraknaha ayatan fahal min muddakirin

WORD BY WORD
وَلَقَدwalaqadAnd certainly
تَّرَكۡنَٰهَآtaraknāhāWe left it
ءَايَةٗāyatan(as) a Sign
فَهَلۡfahalso is (there)
مِنminany
مُّدَّكِرٖmuddakirinwho will receive admonition
TRANSLATION

And We left it as a sign, so is there any who will remember

|||
15

فَكَيۡفَ كَانَ عَذَابِي وَنُذُرِ

Fakayfa kana AAathabee wanuthuri

WORD BY WORD
فَكَيۡفَfakayfaSo how
كَانَkānawas
عَذَابِيʿadhābīMy punishment
وَنُذُرِwanudhuriand My warnings
TRANSLATION

And how [severe] were My punishment and warning

|||
16

وَلَقَدۡ يَسَّرۡنَا ٱلۡقُرۡءَانَ لِلذِّكۡرِ فَهَلۡ مِن مُّدَّكِرٖ

Walaqad yassarna alqurana lilththikri fahal min muddakirin

WORD BY WORD
وَلَقَدۡwalaqadAnd certainly
يَسَّرۡنَاyassarnāWe have made easy
ٱلۡقُرۡءَانَl-qur'ānathe Quran
لِلذِّكۡرِlildhik'rifor remembrance
فَهَلۡfahalso is (there)
مِنminany
مُّدَّكِرٖmuddakirinwho will receive admonition
TRANSLATION

And We have certainly made the Qur'an easy for remembrance, so is there any who will remember

|||
17

كَذَّبَتۡ عَادٞ فَكَيۡفَ كَانَ عَذَابِي وَنُذُرِ

Kaththabat AAadun fakayfa kana AAathabee wanuthuri

WORD BY WORD
كَذَّبَتۡkadhabatDenied
عَادٞʿādunAad
فَكَيۡفَfakayfaso how
كَانَkānawas
عَذَابِيʿadhābīMy punishment
وَنُذُرِwanudhuriand My warnings
TRANSLATION

Aad denied; and how [severe] were My punishment and warning

|||
18

إِنَّآ أَرۡسَلۡنَا عَلَيۡهِمۡ رِيحٗا صَرۡصَرٗا فِي يَوۡمِ نَحۡسٖ مُّسۡتَمِرّٖ

Inna arsalna AAalayhim reehan sarsaran fee yawmi nahsin mustamirrin

WORD BY WORD
إِنَّآinnāIndeed, We
أَرۡسَلۡنَاarsalnā[We] sent
عَلَيۡهِمۡʿalayhimupon them
رِيحٗاrīḥana wind
صَرۡصَرٗاṣarṣaranfurious
فِيon
يَوۡمِyawmia day
نَحۡسٖnaḥsin(of) misfortune
مُّسۡتَمِرّٖmus'tamirrincontinuous
TRANSLATION

Indeed, We sent upon them a screaming wind on a day of continuous misfortune

|||
19

تَنزِعُ ٱلنَّاسَ كَأَنَّهُمۡ أَعۡجَازُ نَخۡلٖ مُّنقَعِرٖ

TanziAAu alnnasa kaannahum aAAjazu nakhlin munqaAAirin

WORD BY WORD
تَنزِعُtanziʿuPlucking out
ٱلنَّاسَl-nāsamen
كَأَنَّهُمۡka-annahumas if they (were)
أَعۡجَازُaʿjāzutrunks
نَخۡلٖnakhlin(of) date-palms
مُّنقَعِرٖmunqaʿirinuprooted
TRANSLATION

Extracting the people as if they were trunks of palm trees uprooted
