يَـٰٓأَيُّهَا ٱلنَّبِيُّ لِمَ تُحَرِّمُ مَآ أَحَلَّ ٱللَّهُ لَكَۖ تَبۡتَغِي مَرۡضَاتَ أَزۡوَٰجِكَۚ وَٱللَّهُ غَفُورٞ رَّحِيمٞ

Ya ayyuha alnnabiyyu lima tuharrimu ma ahalla Allahu laka tabtaghee mardata azwajika waAllahu ghafoorun raheemun

WORD BY WORD
يَـٰٓأَيُّهَاyāayyuhāO
ٱلنَّبِيُّl-nabiyuProphet
لِمَlimaWhy (do)
تُحَرِّمُtuḥarrimuyou prohibit
مَآwhat
أَحَلَّaḥallahas made lawful
ٱللَّهُl-lahuAllah
لَكَۖlakafor you
تَبۡتَغِيtabtaghīseeking
مَرۡضَاتَmarḍāta(to) please
أَزۡوَٰجِكَۚazwājikayour wives
وَٱللَّهُwal-lahuAnd Allah
غَفُورٞghafūrun(is) Oft-Forgiving
رَّحِيمٞraḥīmunMost Merciful
TRANSLATION

O Prophet, why do you prohibit [yourself from] what Allah has made lawful for you, seeking the approval of your wives? And Allah is Forgiving and Merciful

|||
1

قَدۡ فَرَضَ ٱللَّهُ لَكُمۡ تَحِلَّةَ أَيۡمَٰنِكُمۡۚ وَٱللَّهُ مَوۡلَىٰكُمۡۖ وَهُوَ ٱلۡعَلِيمُ ٱلۡحَكِيمُ

Qad farada Allahu lakum tahillata aymanikum waAllahu mawlakum wahuwa alAAaleemu alhakeemu

WORD BY WORD
قَدۡqadIndeed
فَرَضَfaraḍahas ordained
ٱللَّهُl-lahuAllah
لَكُمۡlakumfor you
تَحِلَّةَtaḥillata(the) dissolution
أَيۡمَٰنِكُمۡۚaymānikum(of) your oaths
وَٱللَّهُwal-lahuAnd Allah
مَوۡلَىٰكُمۡۖmawlākum(is) your Protector
وَهُوَwahuwaand He
ٱلۡعَلِيمُl-ʿalīmu(is) the All-Knower
ٱلۡحَكِيمُl-ḥakīmuthe All-Wise
TRANSLATION

Allah has already ordained for you [Muslims] the dissolution of your oaths. And Allah is your protector, and He is the Knowing, the Wise

|||
2

وَإِذۡ أَسَرَّ ٱلنَّبِيُّ إِلَىٰ بَعۡضِ أَزۡوَٰجِهِۦ حَدِيثٗا فَلَمَّا نَبَّأَتۡ بِهِۦ وَأَظۡهَرَهُ ٱللَّهُ عَلَيۡهِ عَرَّفَ بَعۡضَهُۥ وَأَعۡرَضَ عَنۢ بَعۡضٖۖ فَلَمَّا نَبَّأَهَا بِهِۦ قَالَتۡ مَنۡ أَنۢبَأَكَ هَٰذَاۖ قَالَ نَبَّأَنِيَ ٱلۡعَلِيمُ ٱلۡخَبِيرُ

Waith asarra alnnabiyyu ila baAAdi azwajihi hadeethan falamma nabbaat bihi waathharahu Allahu AAalayhi AAarrafa baAAdahu waaAArada AAan baAAdin falamma nabbaaha bihi qalat man anbaaka hatha qala nabbaaniya alAAaleemu alkhabeeru

WORD BY WORD
وَإِذۡwa-idhAnd when
أَسَرَّasarraconfided
ٱلنَّبِيُّl-nabiyuthe Prophet
إِلَىٰilāto
بَعۡضِbaʿḍione
أَزۡوَٰجِهِۦazwājihi(of) his wives
حَدِيثٗاḥadīthana statement
فَلَمَّاfalammāand when
نَبَّأَتۡnabba-atshe informed
بِهِۦbihiabout it
وَأَظۡهَرَهُwa-aẓharahuand made it apparent
ٱللَّهُl-lahuAllah
عَلَيۡهِʿalayhito him
عَرَّفَʿarrafahe made known
بَعۡضَهُۥbaʿḍahua part of it
وَأَعۡرَضَwa-aʿraḍaand avoided
عَنۢʿan[of]
بَعۡضٖۖbaʿḍina part
فَلَمَّاfalammāThen when
نَبَّأَهَاnabba-ahāhe informed her
بِهِۦbihiabout it
قَالَتۡqālatshe said
مَنۡmanWho
أَنۢبَأَكَanba-akainformed you
هَٰذَاۖhādhāthis
قَالَqālaHe said
نَبَّأَنِيَnabba-aniyaHas informed me
ٱلۡعَلِيمُl-ʿalīmuthe All-Knower
ٱلۡخَبِيرُl-khabīruthe All-Aware
TRANSLATION

And [remember] when the Prophet confided to one of his wives a statement; and when she informed [another] of it and Allah showed it to him, he made known part of it and ignored a part. And when he informed her about it, she said, "Who told you this?" He said, "I was informed by the Knowing, the Acquainted

3

إِن تَتُوبَآ إِلَى ٱللَّهِ فَقَدۡ صَغَتۡ قُلُوبُكُمَاۖ وَإِن تَظَٰهَرَا عَلَيۡهِ فَإِنَّ ٱللَّهَ هُوَ مَوۡلَىٰهُ وَجِبۡرِيلُ وَصَٰلِحُ ٱلۡمُؤۡمِنِينَۖ وَٱلۡمَلَـٰٓئِكَةُ بَعۡدَ ذَٰلِكَ ظَهِيرٌ

In tatooba ila Allahi faqad saghat quloobukuma wain tathahara AAalayhi fainna Allaha huwa mawlahu wajibreelu wasalihu almumineena waalmalaikatu baAAda thalika thaheerun

WORD BY WORD
إِنinIf
تَتُوبَآtatūbāyou both turn
إِلَىilāto
ٱللَّهِl-lahiAllah
فَقَدۡfaqadso indeed
صَغَتۡṣaghat(are) inclined
قُلُوبُكُمَاۖqulūbukumāyour hearts
وَإِنwa-inbut if
تَظَٰهَرَاtaẓāharāyou backup each other
عَلَيۡهِʿalayhiagainst him
فَإِنَّfa-innathen indeed
ٱللَّهَl-lahaAllah
هُوَhuwaHe
مَوۡلَىٰهُmawlāhu(is) his Protector
وَجِبۡرِيلُwajib'rīluand Jibreel
وَصَٰلِحُwaṣāliḥuand (the) righteous
ٱلۡمُؤۡمِنِينَۖl-mu'minīnabelievers
وَٱلۡمَلَـٰٓئِكَةُwal-malāikatuand the Angels
بَعۡدَbaʿdaafter
ذَٰلِكَdhālikathat
ظَهِيرٌẓahīrun(are his) assistants
TRANSLATION

If you two [wives] repent to Allah, [it is best], for your hearts have deviated. But if you cooperate against him - then indeed Allah is his protector, and Gabriel and the righteous of the believers and the angels, moreover, are [his] assistants

|||
4

عَسَىٰ رَبُّهُۥٓ إِن طَلَّقَكُنَّ أَن يُبۡدِلَهُۥٓ أَزۡوَٰجًا خَيۡرٗا مِّنكُنَّ مُسۡلِمَٰتٖ مُّؤۡمِنَٰتٖ قَٰنِتَٰتٖ تَـٰٓئِبَٰتٍ عَٰبِدَٰتٖ سَـٰٓئِحَٰتٖ ثَيِّبَٰتٖ وَأَبۡكَارٗا

AAasa rabbuhu in tallaqakunna an yubdilahu azwajan khayran minkunna muslimatin muminatin qanitatin taibatin AAabidatin saihatin thayyibatin waabkaran

WORD BY WORD
عَسَىٰʿasāPerhaps
رَبُّهُۥٓrabbuhuhis Lord
إِنinif
طَلَّقَكُنَّṭallaqakunnahe divorced you
أَنan[that]
يُبۡدِلَهُۥٓyub'dilahuHe will substitute for him
أَزۡوَٰجًاazwājanwives
خَيۡرٗاkhayranbetter
مِّنكُنَّminkunnathan you
مُسۡلِمَٰتٖmus'limātinsubmissive
مُّؤۡمِنَٰتٖmu'minātinfaithful
قَٰنِتَٰتٖqānitātinobedient
تَـٰٓئِبَٰتٍtāibātinrepentant
عَٰبِدَٰتٖʿābidātinwho worship
سَـٰٓئِحَٰتٖsāiḥātinwho fast
ثَيِّبَٰتٖthayyibātinpreviously married
وَأَبۡكَارٗاwa-abkāranand virgins
TRANSLATION

Perhaps his Lord, if he divorced you [all], would substitute for him wives better than you - submitting [to Allah], believing, devoutly obedient, repentant, worshipping, and traveling - [ones] previously married and virgins

|||
5

يَـٰٓأَيُّهَا ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُواْ قُوٓاْ أَنفُسَكُمۡ وَأَهۡلِيكُمۡ نَارٗا وَقُودُهَا ٱلنَّاسُ وَٱلۡحِجَارَةُ عَلَيۡهَا مَلَـٰٓئِكَةٌ غِلَاظٞ شِدَادٞ لَّا يَعۡصُونَ ٱللَّهَ مَآ أَمَرَهُمۡ وَيَفۡعَلُونَ مَا يُؤۡمَرُونَ

Ya ayyuha allatheena amanoo qoo anfusakum waahleekum naran waqooduha alnnasu waalhijaratu AAalayha malaikatun ghilathun shidadun la yaAAsoona Allaha ma amarahum wayafAAaloona ma yumaroona

WORD BY WORD
يَـٰٓأَيُّهَاyāayyuhāO
ٱلَّذِينَalladhīna(you) who
ءَامَنُواْāmanūbelieve
قُوٓاْProtect
أَنفُسَكُمۡanfusakumyourselves
وَأَهۡلِيكُمۡwa-ahlīkumand your families
نَارٗاnāran(from) a Fire
وَقُودُهَاwaqūduhāwhose fuel
ٱلنَّاسُl-nāsu(is) people
وَٱلۡحِجَارَةُwal-ḥijāratuand stones
عَلَيۡهَاʿalayhāover it
مَلَـٰٓئِكَةٌmalāikatun(are) Angels
غِلَاظٞghilāẓunstern
شِدَادٞshidādunsevere
لَّاnot
يَعۡصُونَyaʿṣūnathey disobey
ٱللَّهَl-lahaAllah
مَآ(in) what
أَمَرَهُمۡamarahumHe Commands them
وَيَفۡعَلُونَwayafʿalūnabut they do
مَاwhat
يُؤۡمَرُونَyu'marūnathey are commanded
TRANSLATION

O you who have believed, protect yourselves and your families from a Fire whose fuel is people and stones, over which are [appointed] angels, harsh and severe; they do not disobey Allah in what He commands them but do what they are commanded

|||
6

يَـٰٓأَيُّهَا ٱلَّذِينَ كَفَرُواْ لَا تَعۡتَذِرُواْ ٱلۡيَوۡمَۖ إِنَّمَا تُجۡزَوۡنَ مَا كُنتُمۡ تَعۡمَلُونَ

Ya ayyuha allatheena kafaroo la taAAtathiroo alyawma innama tujzawna ma kuntum taAAmaloona

WORD BY WORD
يَـٰٓأَيُّهَاyāayyuhāO
ٱلَّذِينَalladhīna(you) who
كَفَرُواْkafarūdisbelieve
لَا(Do) not
تَعۡتَذِرُواْtaʿtadhirūmake excuses
ٱلۡيَوۡمَۖl-yawmatoday
إِنَّمَاinnamāOnly
تُجۡزَوۡنَtuj'zawnayou will be recompensed
مَا(for) what
كُنتُمۡkuntumyou used to
تَعۡمَلُونَtaʿmalūnado
TRANSLATION

O you who have disbelieved, make no excuses that Day. You will only be recompensed for what you used to do

|||
7

يَـٰٓأَيُّهَا ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُواْ تُوبُوٓاْ إِلَى ٱللَّهِ تَوۡبَةٗ نَّصُوحًا عَسَىٰ رَبُّكُمۡ أَن يُكَفِّرَ عَنكُمۡ سَيِّـَٔاتِكُمۡ وَيُدۡخِلَكُمۡ جَنَّـٰتٖ تَجۡرِي مِن تَحۡتِهَا ٱلۡأَنۡهَٰرُ يَوۡمَ لَا يُخۡزِي ٱللَّهُ ٱلنَّبِيَّ وَٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُواْ مَعَهُۥۖ نُورُهُمۡ يَسۡعَىٰ بَيۡنَ أَيۡدِيهِمۡ وَبِأَيۡمَٰنِهِمۡ يَقُولُونَ رَبَّنَآ أَتۡمِمۡ لَنَا نُورَنَا وَٱغۡفِرۡ لَنَآۖ إِنَّكَ عَلَىٰ كُلِّ شَيۡءٖ قَدِيرٞ

Ya ayyuha allatheena amanoo tooboo ila Allahi tawbatan nasoohan AAasa rabbukum an yukaffira AAankum sayyiatikum wayudkhilakum jannatin tajree min tahtiha alanharu yawma la yukhzee Allahu alnnabiyya waallatheena amanoo maAAahu nooruhum yasAAa bayna aydeehim wabiaymanihim yaqooloona rabbana atmim lana noorana waighfir lana innaka AAala kulli shayin qadeerun

WORD BY WORD
يَـٰٓأَيُّهَاyāayyuhāO
ٱلَّذِينَalladhīna(you) who believe
ءَامَنُواْāmanūbelieve
تُوبُوٓاْtūbūTurn
إِلَىilāto
ٱللَّهِl-lahiAllah
تَوۡبَةٗtawbatan(in) repentance
نَّصُوحًاnaṣūḥansincere
عَسَىٰʿasāPerhaps
رَبُّكُمۡrabbukumyour Lord
أَنanwill
يُكَفِّرَyukaffiraremove
عَنكُمۡʿankumfrom you
سَيِّـَٔاتِكُمۡsayyiātikumyour evil deeds
وَيُدۡخِلَكُمۡwayud'khilakumand admit you
جَنَّـٰتٖjannātin(into) Gardens
تَجۡرِيtajrīflow
مِنminfrom
تَحۡتِهَاtaḥtihāunderneath it
ٱلۡأَنۡهَٰرُl-anhāruthe rivers
يَوۡمَyawma(on the) Day
لَاnot
يُخۡزِيyukh'zīwill be disgraced
ٱللَّهُl-lahu(by) Allah
ٱلنَّبِيَّl-nabiyathe Prophet
وَٱلَّذِينَwa-alladhīnaand those who
ءَامَنُواْāmanūbelieved
مَعَهُۥۖmaʿahuwith him
نُورُهُمۡnūruhumTheir light
يَسۡعَىٰyasʿāwill run
بَيۡنَbaynabefore
أَيۡدِيهِمۡaydīhimtheir hands
وَبِأَيۡمَٰنِهِمۡwabi-aymānihimand on their right
يَقُولُونَyaqūlūnathey will say
رَبَّنَآrabbanāOur Lord
أَتۡمِمۡatmimPerfect
لَنَاlanāfor us
نُورَنَاnūranāour light
وَٱغۡفِرۡwa-igh'firand grant forgiveness
لَنَآۖlanāto us
إِنَّكَinnakaIndeed, You
عَلَىٰʿalā(are) over
كُلِّkullievery
شَيۡءٖshayinthing
قَدِيرٞqadīrunAll-Powerful
TRANSLATION

O you who have believed, repent to Allah with sincere repentance. Perhaps your Lord will remove from you your misdeeds and admit you into gardens beneath which rivers flow [on] the Day when Allah will not disgrace the Prophet and those who believed with him. Their light will proceed before them and on their right; they will say, "Our Lord, perfect for us our light and forgive us. Indeed, You are over all things competent

8

يَـٰٓأَيُّهَا ٱلنَّبِيُّ جَٰهِدِ ٱلۡكُفَّارَ وَٱلۡمُنَٰفِقِينَ وَٱغۡلُظۡ عَلَيۡهِمۡۚ وَمَأۡوَىٰهُمۡ جَهَنَّمُۖ وَبِئۡسَ ٱلۡمَصِيرُ

Ya ayyuha alnnabiyyu jahidi alkuffara waalmunafiqeena waoghluth AAalayhim wamawahum jahannamu wabisa almaseeru

WORD BY WORD
يَـٰٓأَيُّهَاyāayyuhāO
ٱلنَّبِيُّl-nabiyuProphet
جَٰهِدِjāhidiStrive
ٱلۡكُفَّارَl-kufāra(against) the disbelievers
وَٱلۡمُنَٰفِقِينَwal-munāfiqīnaand the hypocrites
وَٱغۡلُظۡwa-ugh'luẓand be stern
عَلَيۡهِمۡۚʿalayhimwith them
وَمَأۡوَىٰهُمۡwamawāhumAnd their abode
جَهَنَّمُۖjahannamu(is) Hell
وَبِئۡسَwabi'saand wretched is
ٱلۡمَصِيرُl-maṣīruthe destination
TRANSLATION

O Prophet, strive against the disbelievers and the hypocrites and be harsh upon them. And their refuge is Hell, and wretched is the destination

|||
9

ضَرَبَ ٱللَّهُ مَثَلٗا لِّلَّذِينَ كَفَرُواْ ٱمۡرَأَتَ نُوحٖ وَٱمۡرَأَتَ لُوطٖۖ كَانَتَا تَحۡتَ عَبۡدَيۡنِ مِنۡ عِبَادِنَا صَٰلِحَيۡنِ فَخَانَتَاهُمَا فَلَمۡ يُغۡنِيَا عَنۡهُمَا مِنَ ٱللَّهِ شَيۡـٔٗا وَقِيلَ ٱدۡخُلَا ٱلنَّارَ مَعَ ٱلدَّـٰخِلِينَ

Daraba Allahu mathalan lillatheena kafaroo imraata noohin waimraata lootin kanata tahta AAabdayni min AAibadina salihayni fakhanatahuma falam yughniya AAanhuma mina Allahi shayan waqeela odkhula alnnara maAAa alddakhileena

WORD BY WORD
ضَرَبَḍarabaPresents
ٱللَّهُl-lahuAllah
مَثَلٗاmathalanan example
لِّلَّذِينَlilladhīnafor those who
كَفَرُواْkafarūdisbelieved
ٱمۡرَأَتَim'ra-ata(the) wife
نُوحٖnūḥin(of) Nuh
وَٱمۡرَأَتَwa-im'ra-ata(and the) wife
لُوطٖۖlūṭin(of) Lut
كَانَتَاkānatāThey were
تَحۡتَtaḥtaunder
عَبۡدَيۡنِʿabdaynitwo [slaves]
مِنۡminof
عِبَادِنَاʿibādināOur slaves
صَٰلِحَيۡنِṣāliḥaynirighteous
فَخَانَتَاهُمَاfakhānatāhumābut they both betrayed them
فَلَمۡfalamso not
يُغۡنِيَاyugh'niyāthey availed
عَنۡهُمَاʿanhumāboth of them
مِنَminafrom
ٱللَّهِl-lahiAllah
شَيۡـٔٗاshayan(in) anything
وَقِيلَwaqīlaand it was said
ٱدۡخُلَاud'khulāEnter
ٱلنَّارَl-nārathe Fire
مَعَmaʿawith
ٱلدَّـٰخِلِينَl-dākhilīnathose who enter
TRANSLATION

Allah presents an example of those who disbelieved: the wife of Noah and the wife of Lot. They were under two of Our righteous servants but betrayed them, so those prophets did not avail them from Allah at all, and it was said, "Enter the Fire with those who enter

10

وَضَرَبَ ٱللَّهُ مَثَلٗا لِّلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُواْ ٱمۡرَأَتَ فِرۡعَوۡنَ إِذۡ قَالَتۡ رَبِّ ٱبۡنِ لِي عِندَكَ بَيۡتٗا فِي ٱلۡجَنَّةِ وَنَجِّنِي مِن فِرۡعَوۡنَ وَعَمَلِهِۦ وَنَجِّنِي مِنَ ٱلۡقَوۡمِ ٱلظَّـٰلِمِينَ

Wadaraba Allahu mathalan lillatheena amanoo imraata firAAawna ith qalat rabbi ibni lee AAindaka baytan fee aljannati wanajjinee min firAAawna waAAamalihi wanajjinee mina alqawmi alththalimeena

WORD BY WORD
وَضَرَبَwaḍarabaAnd presents
ٱللَّهُl-lahuAllah
مَثَلٗاmathalanan example
لِّلَّذِينَlilladhīnafor those who
ءَامَنُواْāmanūbelieved
ٱمۡرَأَتَim'ra-ata(the) wife
فِرۡعَوۡنَfir'ʿawna(of) Firaun
إِذۡidhwhen
قَالَتۡqālatshe said
رَبِّrabbiMy Lord
ٱبۡنِib'niBuild
لِيfor me
عِندَكَʿindakanear You
بَيۡتٗاbaytana house
فِيin
ٱلۡجَنَّةِl-janatiParadise
وَنَجِّنِيwanajjinīand save me
مِنminfrom
فِرۡعَوۡنَfir'ʿawnaFiraun
وَعَمَلِهِۦwaʿamalihiand his deeds
وَنَجِّنِيwanajjinīand save me
مِنَminafrom
ٱلۡقَوۡمِl-qawmithe people
ٱلظَّـٰلِمِينَl-ẓālimīnathe wrongdoers
TRANSLATION

And Allah presents an example of those who believed: the wife of Pharaoh, when she said, "My Lord, build for me near You a house in Paradise and save me from Pharaoh and his deeds and save me from the wrongdoing people

|||
11

وَمَرۡيَمَ ٱبۡنَتَ عِمۡرَٰنَ ٱلَّتِيٓ أَحۡصَنَتۡ فَرۡجَهَا فَنَفَخۡنَا فِيهِ مِن رُّوحِنَا وَصَدَّقَتۡ بِكَلِمَٰتِ رَبِّهَا وَكُتُبِهِۦ وَكَانَتۡ مِنَ ٱلۡقَٰنِتِينَ

Wamaryama ibnata AAimrana allatee ahsanat farjaha fanafakhna feehi min roohina wasaddaqat bikalimati rabbiha wakutubihi wakanat mina alqaniteena

WORD BY WORD
وَمَرۡيَمَwamaryamaAnd Maryam
ٱبۡنَتَib'nata(the) daughter
عِمۡرَٰنَʿim'rāna(of) Imran
ٱلَّتِيٓallatīwho
أَحۡصَنَتۡaḥṣanatguarded
فَرۡجَهَاfarjahāher chastity
فَنَفَخۡنَاfanafakhnāso We breathed
فِيهِfīhiinto it
مِنminof
رُّوحِنَاrūḥināOur Spirit
وَصَدَّقَتۡwaṣaddaqatAnd she believed
بِكَلِمَٰتِbikalimāti(in the) Words
رَبِّهَاrabbihā(of) her Lord
وَكُتُبِهِۦwakutubihiand His Books
وَكَانَتۡwakānatand she was
مِنَminaof
ٱلۡقَٰنِتِينَl-qānitīnathe devoutly obedient
TRANSLATION

And [the example of] Mary, the daughter of 'Imran, who guarded her chastity, so We blew into [her garment] through Our angel, and she believed in the words of her Lord and His scriptures and was of the devoutly obedient
