نٓۚ وَٱلۡقَلَمِ وَمَا يَسۡطُرُونَ

Noon waalqalami wama yasturoona

WORD BY WORD
نٓۚnoonNun
وَٱلۡقَلَمِwal-qalamiBy the pen
وَمَاwamāand what
يَسۡطُرُونَyasṭurūnathey write
TRANSLATION

Nun. By the pen and what they inscribe

|||
1

مَآ أَنتَ بِنِعۡمَةِ رَبِّكَ بِمَجۡنُونٖ

Ma anta biniAAmati rabbika bimajnoonin

WORD BY WORD
مَآNot
أَنتَantayou (are)
بِنِعۡمَةِbiniʿ'matiby (the) Grace
رَبِّكَrabbika(of) your Lord
بِمَجۡنُونٖbimajnūnina madman
TRANSLATION

You are not, [O Muhammad], by the favor of your Lord, a madman

|||
2

وَإِنَّ لَكَ لَأَجۡرًا غَيۡرَ مَمۡنُونٖ

Wainna laka laajran ghayra mamnoonin

WORD BY WORD
وَإِنَّwa-innaAnd indeed
لَكَlakafor you
لَأَجۡرًاla-ajransurely (is) a reward
غَيۡرَghayrawithout
مَمۡنُونٖmamnūninend
TRANSLATION

And indeed, for you is a reward uninterrupted

|||
3

وَإِنَّكَ لَعَلَىٰ خُلُقٍ عَظِيمٖ

Wainnaka laAAala khuluqin AAatheemin

WORD BY WORD
وَإِنَّكَwa-innakaAnd indeed, you
لَعَلَىٰlaʿalāsurely (are)
خُلُقٍkhuluqin(of) a moral character
عَظِيمٖʿaẓīmingreat
TRANSLATION

And indeed, you are of a great moral character

4

فَسَتُبۡصِرُ وَيُبۡصِرُونَ

Fasatubsiru wayubsiroona

WORD BY WORD
فَسَتُبۡصِرُfasatub'ṣiruSo you will see
وَيُبۡصِرُونَwayub'ṣirūnaand they will see
TRANSLATION

So you will see and they will see

5

بِأَييِّكُمُ ٱلۡمَفۡتُونُ

Biayyikumu almaftoonu

WORD BY WORD
بِأَييِّكُمُbi-ayyikumuWhich of you
ٱلۡمَفۡتُونُl-maftūnu(is) the afflicted one
TRANSLATION

Which of you is the afflicted [by a devil]

|||
6

إِنَّ رَبَّكَ هُوَ أَعۡلَمُ بِمَن ضَلَّ عَن سَبِيلِهِۦ وَهُوَ أَعۡلَمُ بِٱلۡمُهۡتَدِينَ

Inna rabbaka huwa aAAlamu biman dalla AAan sabeelihi wahuwa aAAlamu bialmuhtadeena

WORD BY WORD
إِنَّinnaIndeed
رَبَّكَrabbakayour Lord
هُوَhuwaHe
أَعۡلَمُaʿlamu(is) most knowing
بِمَنbimanof (he) who
ضَلَّḍallahas strayed
عَنʿanfrom
سَبِيلِهِۦsabīlihiHis way
وَهُوَwahuwaand He
أَعۡلَمُaʿlamu(is) most knowing
بِٱلۡمُهۡتَدِينَbil-muh'tadīnaof the guided ones
TRANSLATION

Indeed, your Lord is most knowing of who has gone astray from His way, and He is most knowing of the [rightly] guided

|||
7

فَلَا تُطِعِ ٱلۡمُكَذِّبِينَ

Fala tutiAAi almukaththibeena

WORD BY WORD
فَلَاfalāSo (do) not
تُطِعِtuṭiʿiobey
ٱلۡمُكَذِّبِينَl-mukadhibīnathe deniers
TRANSLATION

Then do not obey the deniers

|||
8

وَدُّواْ لَوۡ تُدۡهِنُ فَيُدۡهِنُونَ

Waddoo law tudhinu fayudhinoona

WORD BY WORD
وَدُّواْwaddūThey wish
لَوۡlawthat
تُدۡهِنُtud'hinuyou should compromise
فَيُدۡهِنُونَfayud'hinūnaso they would compromise
TRANSLATION

They wish that you would soften [in your position], so they would soften [toward you]

|||
9

وَلَا تُطِعۡ كُلَّ حَلَّافٖ مَّهِينٍ

Wala tutiAA kulla hallafin maheenin

WORD BY WORD
وَلَاwalāAnd (do) not
تُطِعۡtuṭiʿobey
كُلَّkullaevery
حَلَّافٖḥallāfinhabitual swearer
مَّهِينٍmahīninworthless
TRANSLATION

And do not obey every worthless habitual swearer

10

هَمَّازٖ مَّشَّآءِۭ بِنَمِيمٖ

Hammazin mashshain binameemin

WORD BY WORD
هَمَّازٖhammāzinDefamer
مَّشَّآءِۭmashāingoing about
بِنَمِيمٖbinamīminwith malicious gossip
TRANSLATION

[And] scorner, going about with malicious gossip

|||
11

مَّنَّاعٖ لِّلۡخَيۡرِ مُعۡتَدٍ أَثِيمٍ

MannaAAin lilkhayri muAAtadin atheemin

WORD BY WORD
مَّنَّاعٖmannāʿinA preventer
لِّلۡخَيۡرِlil'khayriof (the) good
مُعۡتَدٍmuʿ'tadintransgressor
أَثِيمٍathīminsinful
TRANSLATION

A preventer of good, transgressing and sinful

12

عُتُلِّۭ بَعۡدَ ذَٰلِكَ زَنِيمٍ

AAutullin baAAda thalika zaneemin

WORD BY WORD
عُتُلِّۭʿutullinCruel
بَعۡدَbaʿdaafter
ذَٰلِكَdhālika(all) that
زَنِيمٍzanīminutterly useless
TRANSLATION

Cruel, moreover, and an illegitimate pretender

|||
13

أَن كَانَ ذَا مَالٖ وَبَنِينَ

An kana tha malin wabaneena

WORD BY WORD
أَنanBecause
كَانَkāna(he) is
ذَاdhāa possessor
مَالٖmālin(of) wealth
وَبَنِينَwabanīnaand children
TRANSLATION

Because he is a possessor of wealth and children

14

إِذَا تُتۡلَىٰ عَلَيۡهِ ءَايَٰتُنَا قَالَ أَسَٰطِيرُ ٱلۡأَوَّلِينَ

Itha tutla AAalayhi ayatuna qala asateeru alawwaleena

WORD BY WORD
إِذَاidhāWhen
تُتۡلَىٰtut'lāare recited
عَلَيۡهِʿalayhito him
ءَايَٰتُنَاāyātunāOur Verses
قَالَqālahe says
أَسَٰطِيرُasāṭīruStories
ٱلۡأَوَّلِينَl-awalīna(of) the former (people)
TRANSLATION

When Our verses are recited to him, he says, "Legends of the former peoples

|||
15

سَنَسِمُهُۥ عَلَى ٱلۡخُرۡطُومِ

Sanasimuhu AAala alkhurtoomi

WORD BY WORD
سَنَسِمُهُۥsanasimuhuWe will brand him
عَلَىʿalāon
ٱلۡخُرۡطُومِl-khur'ṭūmithe snout
TRANSLATION

We will brand him upon the snout

|||
16

إِنَّا بَلَوۡنَٰهُمۡ كَمَا بَلَوۡنَآ أَصۡحَٰبَ ٱلۡجَنَّةِ إِذۡ أَقۡسَمُواْ لَيَصۡرِمُنَّهَا مُصۡبِحِينَ

Inna balawnahum kama balawna ashaba aljannati ith aqsamoo layasrimunnaha musbiheena

WORD BY WORD
إِنَّاinnāIndeed, We
بَلَوۡنَٰهُمۡbalawnāhumhave tried them
كَمَاkamāas
بَلَوۡنَآbalawnāWe tried
أَصۡحَٰبَaṣḥāba(the) companions
ٱلۡجَنَّةِl-janati(of) the garden
إِذۡidhwhen
أَقۡسَمُواْaqsamūthey swore
لَيَصۡرِمُنَّهَاlayaṣrimunnahāto pluck its fruit
مُصۡبِحِينَmuṣ'biḥīna(in the) morning
TRANSLATION

Indeed, We have tried them as We tried the companions of the garden, when they swore to cut its fruit in the [early] morning

|||
17

وَلَا يَسۡتَثۡنُونَ

Wala yastathnoona

WORD BY WORD
وَلَاwalāAnd not
يَسۡتَثۡنُونَyastathnūnamaking exception
TRANSLATION

Without making exception

|||
18

فَطَافَ عَلَيۡهَا طَآئِفٞ مِّن رَّبِّكَ وَهُمۡ نَآئِمُونَ

Fatafa AAalayha taifun min rabbika wahum naimoona

WORD BY WORD
فَطَافَfaṭāfaSo there came
عَلَيۡهَاʿalayhāupon it
طَآئِفٞṭāifuna visitation
مِّنminfrom
رَّبِّكَrabbikayour Lord
وَهُمۡwahumwhile they
نَآئِمُونَnāimūnawere asleep
TRANSLATION

So there came upon the garden an affliction from your Lord while they were asleep

|||
19

فَأَصۡبَحَتۡ كَٱلصَّرِيمِ

Faasbahat kaalssareemi

WORD BY WORD
فَأَصۡبَحَتۡfa-aṣbaḥatSo it became
كَٱلصَّرِيمِkal-ṣarīmias if reaped
TRANSLATION

And it became as though reaped
