لَآ أُقۡسِمُ بِهَٰذَا ٱلۡبَلَدِ

La oqsimu bihatha albaladi

WORD BY WORD
لَآNay
أُقۡسِمُuq'simuI swear
بِهَٰذَاbihādhāby this
ٱلۡبَلَدِl-baladicity
TRANSLATION

I swear by this city, Makkah

|||
1

وَأَنتَ حِلُّۢ بِهَٰذَا ٱلۡبَلَدِ

Waanta hillun bihatha albaladi

WORD BY WORD
وَأَنتَwa-antaAnd you
حِلُّۢḥillun(are) free (to dwell)
بِهَٰذَاbihādhāin this
ٱلۡبَلَدِl-baladicity
TRANSLATION

And you, [O Muhammad], are free of restriction in this city

|||
2

وَوَالِدٖ وَمَا وَلَدَ

Wawalidin wama walada

WORD BY WORD
وَوَالِدٖwawālidinAnd the begetter
وَمَاwamāand what
وَلَدَwaladahe begot
TRANSLATION

And [by] the father and that which was born [of him]

|||
3

لَقَدۡ خَلَقۡنَا ٱلۡإِنسَٰنَ فِي كَبَدٍ

Laqad khalaqna alinsana fee kabadin

WORD BY WORD
لَقَدۡlaqadCertainly
خَلَقۡنَاkhalaqnāWe have created
ٱلۡإِنسَٰنَl-insānaman
فِي(to be) in
كَبَدٍkabadinhardship
TRANSLATION

We have certainly created man into hardship

|||
4

أَيَحۡسَبُ أَن لَّن يَقۡدِرَ عَلَيۡهِ أَحَدٞ

Ayahsabu an lan yaqdira AAalayhi ahadun

WORD BY WORD
أَيَحۡسَبُayaḥsabuDoes he think
أَنanthat
لَّنlannot
يَقۡدِرَyaqdirahas power
عَلَيۡهِʿalayhiover him
أَحَدٞaḥadunanyone
TRANSLATION

Does he think that never will anyone overcome him

|||
5

يَقُولُ أَهۡلَكۡتُ مَالٗا لُّبَدًا

Yaqoolu ahlaktu malan lubadan

WORD BY WORD
يَقُولُyaqūluHe will say
أَهۡلَكۡتُahlaktuI have squandered
مَالٗاmālanwealth
لُّبَدًاlubadanabundant
TRANSLATION

He says, "I have spent wealth in abundance

|||
6

أَيَحۡسَبُ أَن لَّمۡ يَرَهُۥٓ أَحَدٌ

Ayahsabu an lam yarahu ahadun

WORD BY WORD
أَيَحۡسَبُayaḥsabuDoes he think
أَنanthat
لَّمۡlamnot
يَرَهُۥٓyarahusees him
أَحَدٌaḥadunanyone
TRANSLATION

Does he think that no one has seen him

|||
7

أَلَمۡ نَجۡعَل لَّهُۥ عَيۡنَيۡنِ

Alam najAAal lahu AAaynayni

WORD BY WORD
أَلَمۡalamHave not
نَجۡعَلnajʿalWe made
لَّهُۥlahufor him
عَيۡنَيۡنِʿaynaynitwo eyes
TRANSLATION

Have We not made for him two eyes

|||
8

وَلِسَانٗا وَشَفَتَيۡنِ

Walisanan washafatayni

WORD BY WORD
وَلِسَانٗاwalisānanAnd a tongue
وَشَفَتَيۡنِwashafatayniand two lips
TRANSLATION

And a tongue and two lips

|||
9

وَهَدَيۡنَٰهُ ٱلنَّجۡدَيۡنِ

Wahadaynahu alnnajdayni

WORD BY WORD
وَهَدَيۡنَٰهُwahadaynāhuAnd shown him
ٱلنَّجۡدَيۡنِl-najdaynithe two ways
TRANSLATION

And have shown him the two ways

|||
10

فَلَا ٱقۡتَحَمَ ٱلۡعَقَبَةَ

Fala iqtahama alAAaqabata

WORD BY WORD
فَلَاfalāBut not
ٱقۡتَحَمَiq'taḥamahe has attempted
ٱلۡعَقَبَةَl-ʿaqabatathe steep path
TRANSLATION

But he has not broken through the difficult pass

|||
11

وَمَآ أَدۡرَىٰكَ مَا ٱلۡعَقَبَةُ

Wama adraka ma alAAaqabatu

WORD BY WORD
وَمَآwamāAnd what
أَدۡرَىٰكَadrākacan make you know
مَاwhat
ٱلۡعَقَبَةُl-ʿaqabatuthe steep path (is)
TRANSLATION

And what can make you know what is [breaking through] the difficult pass

|||
12

فَكُّ رَقَبَةٍ

Fakku raqabatin

WORD BY WORD
فَكُّfakku(It is) freeing
رَقَبَةٍraqabatina neck
TRANSLATION

It is the freeing of a slave

|||
13

أَوۡ إِطۡعَٰمٞ فِي يَوۡمٖ ذِي مَسۡغَبَةٖ

Aw itAAamun fee yawmin thee masghabatin

WORD BY WORD
أَوۡawOr
إِطۡعَٰمٞiṭ'ʿāmunfeeding
فِيin
يَوۡمٖyawmina day
ذِيdhīof
مَسۡغَبَةٖmasghabatinsevere hunger
TRANSLATION

Or feeding on a day of severe hunger

|||
14

يَتِيمٗا ذَا مَقۡرَبَةٍ

Yateeman tha maqrabatin

WORD BY WORD
يَتِيمٗاyatīmanAn orphan
ذَاdhāof
مَقۡرَبَةٍmaqrabatinnear relationship
TRANSLATION

An orphan of near relationship

|||
15

أَوۡ مِسۡكِينٗا ذَا مَتۡرَبَةٖ

Aw miskeenan tha matrabatin

WORD BY WORD
أَوۡawOr
مِسۡكِينٗاmis'kīnana needy person
ذَاdhāin
مَتۡرَبَةٖmatrabatinmisery
TRANSLATION

Or a needy person in misery

|||
16

ثُمَّ كَانَ مِنَ ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُواْ وَتَوَاصَوۡاْ بِٱلصَّبۡرِ وَتَوَاصَوۡاْ بِٱلۡمَرۡحَمَةِ

Thumma kana mina allatheena amanoo watawasaw bialssabri watawasaw bialmarhamati

WORD BY WORD
ثُمَّthummaThen
كَانَkānahe is
مِنَminaof
ٱلَّذِينَalladhīnathose who
ءَامَنُواْāmanūbelieve
وَتَوَاصَوۡاْwatawāṣawand enjoin (each other)
بِٱلصَّبۡرِbil-ṣabrito patience
وَتَوَاصَوۡاْwatawāṣawand enjoin (each other)
بِٱلۡمَرۡحَمَةِbil-marḥamatito compassion
TRANSLATION

And then being among those who believed and advised one another to patience and advised one another to compassion

|||
17

أُوْلَـٰٓئِكَ أَصۡحَٰبُ ٱلۡمَيۡمَنَةِ

Olaika ashabu almaymanati

WORD BY WORD
أُوْلَـٰٓئِكَulāikaThose
أَصۡحَٰبُaṣḥābu(are the) companions
ٱلۡمَيۡمَنَةِl-maymanati(of) the right (hand)
TRANSLATION

Those are the companions of the right

|||
18

وَٱلَّذِينَ كَفَرُواْ بِـَٔايَٰتِنَا هُمۡ أَصۡحَٰبُ ٱلۡمَشۡـَٔمَةِ

Waallatheena kafaroo biayatina hum ashabu almashamati

WORD BY WORD
وَٱلَّذِينَwa-alladhīnaBut those who
كَفَرُواْkafarūdisbelieve
بِـَٔايَٰتِنَاbiāyātināin Our Verses
هُمۡhumthey
أَصۡحَٰبُaṣḥābu(are the) companions
ٱلۡمَشۡـَٔمَةِl-mashamati(of) the left (hand)
TRANSLATION

But they who disbelieved in Our signs - those are the companions of the left

|||
19

عَلَيۡهِمۡ نَارٞ مُّؤۡصَدَةُۢ

AAalayhim narun musadatun

WORD BY WORD
عَلَيۡهِمۡʿalayhimOver them
نَارٞnārun(will be the) Fire
مُّؤۡصَدَةُۢmu'ṣadatunclosed in
TRANSLATION

Over them will be fire closed in
